Both of whom had to leave the province in their teens and go the NCAA route.

Knowing how Quebec's been doing the last two decades, their parents probably unknowingly gave them a real shot of having careers playing professional hockey all the while getting an education.
 
So how does it work with draftees in college - Levi was drafted in 2020, and entering his 3rd year at NCAA. Is he eligible for college UFA 2024 Aug (draft + 4) or the Aug after?
 
If a player is drafted in America - whether it's from the USNDP, the USHL, US Highschools, etc, teams have either 4 or 5 years to sign the player. Assuming they're drafted in their 18 year old season.

If the player goes directly to the NCAA, teams have four years. If the player stays another year in the USHL/lower tiers, teams have 5 years. Now, I don't think this was amended in the last CBA signing, so maybe it still applies (I'm assuming it does), but in that situation, the player could play 3 years in the NCAA and decide to leave college, and become a free agent (See Zach Hyman and Jimey Vesey) on August 15th of that summer.

In Devon Levi's case, he has no such leverage. He either stays in the NCAA for two more years and waits until August 15th 2025 before being a free agent, or he goes pro but his NHL right belong to Buffalo. He could tell them he doesn't want to sign with them and try to leverage a trade. Happens pretty much every year, but not usually to notable prospects.
 
Perets, on the other hand, is a pure UFA. The second he decides to leave college, he'll be available to every single team in the NHL. I think he'll likely stay for his Senior season and sign an ELC next Spring.

I'm always concerned about high shooting percentages (he is at 20 percent). I'm pro small players but they need the offense and he just has not shown it in his career.

If he is on the team in 3 years that means Slaf, Roy, kidney, Farrel, mysak, guidon, simoneau, and whoever we draft this year...did not pan out. I put all of their potential higher than RHP.

Man, the Habs need a true QB. It’s no coincidence we’ve experienced hard years since Markov retired, I think.

So this kid is exciting. But I am hesitant… the physical aspect of the game is definitely an issue.

Jacob de la Rose was a projected top-5 before the season started, until everyone realized that he had stone hands.

And regardless of how Owen Beck turns out, it's why I think picks used on players like Owen Beck are a waste of everybody's time. You can find the smart, savy, 3rd/4th liners every single year without much difficulty, whether via free agency or by trade.

Nobody here is, or even should be, more excited for Owen Beck as a prospect. The reason is simple: While we don't know how Hutson's game will translate to the pro level, as a defenseman, he's putting up numbers that would be highly impressive for a forward.

I think Beck has a much better, and much more likely (if we're being honest), chance of having a long career in the NHL. But from all indications, he maxes out as a third line center.

Picks should be used more often on high-end skill players with real question marks about them, whether it be size, injury history or the league they play in.
