Treliving should never have been hired in the first place. This market is a job for an exceptional GM, not an average or below average one.
Au contraire, it's perfect for a mediocre GM because it's a market that doesn't rely on winning in order for the franchise to be financially successful.

My late uncle was a big mucky-muck with RBC. Back in the late 70's some Australian bigwig was in Toronto for dealings with RBC and he wanted to see a hockey game. The bank tried to find him a pair of golds for a Leafs game but couldn't track down anything suitable. In the end, the bank wound up paying to fly this clown first class to Montreal to see the Habs instead. Even though the Habs were a dynasty and the Leafs were the punchline to a joke about dysfunctional sports teams, it was easier to get Habs tickets than Leafs tickets.

Treleving is the type of GM this team will always hire. When your fans demand nothing you give them nothing and they deserve nothing. Be glad at that he is at least smart enough not to throw more money at Marner hoping that he'll stop being a dressing room cancer and a playoff bitch. The easiest thing in the world for the Leafs to do would be to run it back. Be thankful that they've finally come to their senses.

I'm probably the oldest Leaf fan on this board ( I've seen 4 Leaf cup wins, I was in Grades 1,2,3 and 7 for their last wins. I'm not sure I remember the details of the 62 or 63 Cup wins, but I can remeber the 64 and 67 wins) and this Mitchy hate is kind of deja vu. When the Big M was traded in 1968, the media and Woodbridge fans were glad to see him go. Mahovolich was probably a top ten player, but was paid as a top 2 or 3. When the team lost, it was Mahovolich's fault; too slow, no effort given. But it's really difficult to find a top ten player. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/4537421/2023/05/22/maple-leafs-roster-trades-history/

This idea that Toronto is the only place where there's pressure is ridiculous.

He's not going to escape pressure in Vegas or LA. Sure, it's not as intense, but it's still a big deal. If he was on Florida right now and they lost the next two, he'd be feeling it.
Fans in Florida will have forgotten that hockey exists about 5 minutes after the last game ends. And that would be true whether they won or lost. They aren't hockey fans, they're Panthers fans. And hockey is just a distraction. In Florida, and most everywhere in the US,there is only football season, and waiting for football season.

Marcel Dionne scored over 700 goals playing mostly for bad teams in markets that didn't give a shit. Marner could do that quite easily.

I think being Swedish has something to do with it, but not necessarily because of Mats and Borje. For the most part, they all seem to just be chill guys who don't let the external shit get to them.
It's not about being Swedish, it's about not being coddled little bitches. Salming and Sundin didn't have helicopter parents like Marner did. Their lives weren't staged managed from a young age like his. Marner is a product of his upbringing. His father was an entitled cunt and so is his kid. No character whatsoever. No ability to deal with adversity aside from calling Daddy and asking him to fix it.

I'm not really worried that Mitch Marner is suddenly going to morph into a Frank Mahovolich because he's away from all the big meanies in Toronto

I think it depends on where he goes to, to whether he can get over whatever mentally is going on inside his head.

If a new coach, teammate, environment etc can push him a bit more - he could be a a truly impact player that will have the media going crazy over how Canada is impossible to play in. Will be 10 years of summer UFA media stories for Sportsnet folks to clickbait Canada with.

There is no way the Leafs will be better from him leaving. Period. More so cause I don’t trust our GM to use his cap space to make us nearly as good in weak UFA year + already traded most of our assets for non-impact players. My position is if we don’t get top 5 goaltending this year, we are a playoff bubble team paired with how the coach wants this team to play low event hockey where our goalie is forced to be that difference.

Rogers will forever suck as the owners of this team - they have two offseasons to fix the management and didn’t fully pull the trigger to get this team ever an average GM and coach.
