It really is and Bates' performance is just one of the greatest ever and kudos to everyone involved for giving unknown (Although big stage name) a chance instead of going for the bigger name. Caan's career himself was in the toilet. So casting him was also risky as well. I know Reiner would have had to push for both,. Warren Beatty (Who barely acted and seems to have turned down everything) was originally offered it and worked a bit on the script with Reiner.
 
'84: Spinal Tap - first/best mockumentary
'86: Stand by Me - best coming of age
'87: Princess Bride - best fairytale romance
'89: Harry Met Sally - i don't know the genre too well but maybe best comedy romance?
'90: Misery - maybe not best but a very very good horror
'92: Few Good Men - best courtroom drama

A few good man is a classic but it’s a notch below 12 angry men, to kill a mockingbird, judgement at Nuremberg and jury duty.
