GDT | Game #82 | at Flyers | Tuesday, April 14th 2026 7:00 PM EST

I don't understand this move either unless it was an emotional response to not winning the frozen four. If his brother is not going to Michigan next season (which I can understand him wanting to play with his brother) then what is the purpose of returning? Further development would not be better there than in the pros. Maybe mom wants him getting his degree? Maybe he places higher importance on the degree than most? It's quite baffling actually and yes, it does sort of mess up the rebuild timeline. If a young, solid second line center is available, I would move him as well because he just put question marks on himself with this decision.
The playing with your brother stuff is BS but if that is the reason, I would trade Hage over the summer. That's not a serious hockey player. I don't for a second think that's the reason. But the trade rumors could be,

It ain’t the brother. Confirmed.

But if it’s the trade rumour… then maybe trade him. Not a fan of delicate geniuses.

this might be the case where the simplest solution is the real one: he has unfinished business in Michigan, including being the team's number one C in all situations.

my doubt is why wouldn't Hughes simply say that...however, we know from the recent deadline that Hughes doesn't always say the proper thing....and he most certainly isn't crazy with Hages decision. Habs would rather develop him in house.

Yeah, it’s a tricky situation no doubt.

But maybe reframe the KPI: it’s to win the cup, not the trade.

What does Hage + Engstrom get you? Sure, you pay a lot. But the trade “winner” can still be years away from their window whereas you accelerate into yours.
