The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

with this cap i don't think $7m gets the 'Top" guys.

It won't, Anderson will get significantly more.

Raddysh doesn't appear to be viewed as a "top guy". I'll default to the AFP projections as a starting point, they've been pretty fucking excellent for accuracy so far. Even a significant inflation from their starting number is still a reasonable contract for a 20+ minute a night guy who can move the puck.

i think the best way to add a big money guy this year might be the trade market not the ufa market.
Tbh I’m hoping to see Chayka stockpile a few assets by moving out some of the shit we don’t want on the roster. Use free agency to fill out the roster.

If he’s a true nerd he should be able to find us the next Raddysh.

I just think prices are gonna be super insane with the cap rise. And none of the players are great.

Meanwhile we might be able to package some of our middling overpaid contracts for mediocre to bad players for a big overpaid contract for an actual good player without full term left.

and i'm not sure skjei and montour even quality as 'good' tbh.

Eh, Montour is playing 22 minutes a night as the best nerdies defender on a bad team. Skjei had decent results in extreme defensive usage. I mean, you seem to love McCabe enough.

Skjei: .72 48.9xG, 22.6 Dzone starts/60
McCabe: .91 P/60 44.9xG, 22.7 Dzone starts/60

I mean, if Skjei isn't good, McCabe is?

Is Andersson worth the extra money? Get the best players.

Raddysh has been better than Rasmus over the last 2 years and far and away better this year. There's risk from lack of track record, but there's also opportunity due to lack of track record. He's likely to come in at a similar AAV as the guys down a tier from Andersson in this class, Trouba & Carlson.

So as of now we have about $25m in capspace before signing any of the RFA.

The biggest hole on the roster is once again 3C. Personally i think we have a bunch of good internal candidates to fight over 4C.
wingers are more than fine if they just re-up maccelli and robbie. though i'd still rather move domi and joshua out.

and of course the most important thing still would be to try and add a legit #1 dman. That's always been the best way to upgrade this team.

but money is really no object - Chayka should be targetting the most expensive targets. ufa or trades.

Biggest hole in top 4 on D. We need a couple of them.

hmm i guess i'll take a look but i'm pretty sure skjei and montour were terrible last year.

Last year:

Bad team, bad xG. He went from being the #3-4 usage guy in Florida to being the #1 in Seattle. He doesn't handle the heavies, but he's not getting light usage either. 19-20 Dzone starts/60 type stuff.

Skjei was bad last year though, yeah. This year looks like he's back to being whatever Brady Skjei was previously though, just on a terrible team.

and I'm not saying I love either of them, but given the state of our blueline if Raddysh's downside is the next one of those two, without giving up assets? Sign me up. Fuck, then by all means trade Knies and go get Adam Fox or some shit.

McCabe-Fox
Rielly-Raddysh
OEL-Tanev

Blueline makeover done.

2yrs:

McCabe: 36.6toi% (+7.4dzs%), 48.3xgf% (+1.1rel), .57p1/60, .99p/60
Skjei: 35.7toi% (+2.4dzs%), 47.9xgf% (-1.8rel), .45p1/60, .74p/60
Montour: 38.3toi% (+2.1dzs%), 46.2xgf% (+1.2rel), .61p1/60, .92p/60
Rielly: 36.0toi% (-7.2dzs%), 49.7xgf% (+2.1rel), .80p1/60, 1.36p/60

So McCabe plays top matchup minutes, the other two don't, and McCabe still performs as good or better than them across the board, for like half the price.
