Around the League 2019-2026 Edition

$4.2 is rich for sure.

though i don't know what you can get for that on the UFA market tbh. especially short term. He'd probably retain trade value at that kind of price.

And yeah he shouldn't be top-6 - but technically he was probably better than Cowan last year, and he slotted nicely against podkolzin there in that comp in all of price, age, and performance so i stuck him there.

ideally both him and Robby imo would slot in as the 3rd line wings, at about $6m caphit between them. I wouldn't throw away either of them with RFA control, even if we want to just be trading them by the deadline.

There are many guys I want to watch play in a new environment with a coach that doesn't preach north-south digging in, but on the top of that list may be Maccelli. I don't think he's great, he's definitely limited, like a playmaking version of Robertson. But having a guy with that skill on a third line is a luxury, even if the contract will be a bit rich.

Do I want all three of Maccelli, Domi and Robertson to be Leafs next year? No. I think they need to trade at least one of them (Domi pls). But if the mandate is skill and speed and skating, he's worth keeping imo.

Maccelli's preseason doms projection was a tick positive (+0.5), and his end of season doms were a tick positive (+0.1), and his offensive and defensive doms were both at about the same level, so a perfectly average borderline top-6 forward really. 26yrs old. As a 3rd liner he's a positive value.

Robbie's preseason projection was as a below average 3rd liner (-4.5), and his end of season doms were exactly as bad as projection (-4.6). Robbie's kinda young at 25 and still arguably hasn't been given a legit chance in a proper role, so for me he's still keepable, even though he may never be more than an average 3rd liner.

Domi's preseason projection was also as a below average 3rd liner (-4.4), and his end of season doms were terrible (-8.5) and at the level of a bad 4th liner, so just a bad forward in general. And he's 31, so yeah, he's obviously the one to go.

in terms of the other bottom 6ers last year,

Roy in a 3rd line role was projected as a good 3rd liner at -2.3, but ended up looking like a typical 4th liner at -6.1 in the end, probably because he isn't actually a C.

but 3 of the only leafs to actually perform better than projected was the most used 4th line combo....

Laughton was projected as a typical 4th liner at -6.3, but ended up at more of a broderline 3rd liner -4.0 pace.

Joshua was projected as a typical 4th liner at -6.5, but ended up at more of an solid 3rd liner level at a -3.0 pace.

Lorentz was projected as a bad 4th liner at -9.1, but ended up as an above average 4th liner at -5.5 or so.

there was no preseason projection for Jarnkrok, and he ended pacing for like -12.5 doms, so every bit as unplayable as he looked.

As we know, I think Lorentz is the perfect 4th liner. Still love him.

Laughton I never really warmed up to much, but I feel like under a good coach, he might show as a much better player. If he wanted to come back and take the 3C role for cheapish, assuming we didn't find anyone better, I'd give it a shot, but much rather get him at a bargain price to be 4C though probably not realistic.

Joshua is the one guy who I feel might benefit most from a coaching change and healthy season. Definitely not married to keeping him, but I am legit intrigued to see how he can do under a different coach and system.

Unless he can repeat the stupid shooting % he had when his old moron team paid him all that money he's an overpaid plug

I think Lorentz is a fine 4th liner, but i much prefer my team develop these dudes at league minimum then buying them in free agency for any price.

Its about the process.

If you cant be trusted to develop your own efficient 4th liners who have upside of moving up your lineup in the future why should i trust you to do anything else.

4th line and bottom pair UFA shopping tells me you are a shit org.
If there's a good fourth liner available for dirt cheap in UFA that you pick up, it doesn't say anything about your organization.

If you're paying $3M for that, then you have a problem.
