It's not a pessimistic view at all. Father time is undefeated and Tanev is the 12th oldest defender in the league. It's inevitable, the question is whether it's now now or just close to now.

Of the 11 older than him, 4 have won a Norris, a few more have earned top 3 Norris votes, a few more have been all purpose heavy minute #1 defenders, and a few are cooked. The only other notable one is Ian Cole, who is the #5-6 for a 92 point western conference team.

Thank god he’s only got 5 years left on his deal.

You're really dying to add and subtract while i'm dying to just add.

Well, we do have limited roster spots.

I'm dying to de-risk our blueline, yes, absolutely. Tanev is the 12th oldest defender in the league coming off a season he played 11 games in, OEL is fine but the only time he's been on an actually good team he was their #5, but yeah he can stay for now. I love Mo but he's always been shit defensively and is coming off of a really bad season, just because I want that to be Berube's fault doesn't necessarily make it so.

Hey satchel Paige was a 3.5 war guy at 46

I think you have a good shot at one, but both is very optimistic.

Also i'd be chasing Carlson well before Rasmus

Fwiw, I'm partial to just going and getting Spence from Ottawa instead of the 2nd UFA, but I'm not convinced that getting an American to come to Toronto is easier than getting a Swede to come when Mats Sundin calls you at 12:01 on UFA day.

This is fair. I do wonder what the state of Toronto as a FA destination is today. I’m guessing the fact they were terrible last year doesn’t change much besides olds wanting to ring chase (maybe Carlson) passing, but the three feelings being, love to, fuckjng no and pay me sure

I heard Carlson wants east? I imagine Boston is the fave?

Toronto is fine, I don't think it's any worse a UFA destination now than it's been over the last ~8 years. If you were okay with the attention before, a bad season (followed by adding the #1 overall pick) isn't going to change your mind.

As for Carlson. Boston sure, I could see him being what Tampa does instead of Raddysh. Carolina has the cap space and is an obvious cup chasing destination. Carlson is probably worth what he's asking in Tulsky's nerd model.
