The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

That is exactly what Knies for Fox/Werenski would be though.
But it's not. It's ripping a hole in the team by removing Knies. I'd love to get those guys, but it's such a simple, easy decision and better outcome to keep Knies and get Raddysh for free. Do I care that Raddysh isn't as good as those guys? Not in the least.

Because Knies + Raddysh > Werenski or Fox.

You can replace Knies in FA with a winger, say Tuch

Fox and Tuch>>>>>Knies and Raddysh

Except that Tuch is also 29 and going on the downswing soon, and those two guys will cost you over $20M.

Whereas Knies is 23 and him plus Raddysh might only cost you $15M.

Not to mention, didn't Tuch just go pointless or something in that last series?

it's a definite pass. I'd much rather keep Knies if that was the best offer.

Yep. Again, my preference would be to not trade Knies at all.

But if we are trading him, it should only be for a stud #1 in his prime with multiple years of control. Not an over-the-hill former stud #1 in his 30’s. Not a pending UFA. Not for a “decent top-pair/top-4 defenseman”. And not for a defensemen who might potentially become a stud #1. Only for the genuine article, period.

Otherwise, keep Knies.

But it isn't an either or for Werenski/Fox and Raddysh. You can (and probably should) do both.

Werenski/Fox + Raddysh >> Knies + Raddysh and they're basically AAV equivalent.

This all just comes down to you massively overrating Knies.

or, the equivalent at centre

but yeah

Like there are no guarantees you can sign any FA so the question becomes what is more valuable Knies or Fox/Werenski

It’s not even close

Then you ask do I need a D or W more? And which of those is easier to acquire?

No, because again, you're tearing a young power winger out of your lineup for nothing.

Andersson just came off basically a 50 point season and is the same age as those guys. Especially if I'm getting Raddysh too, why do I so desperately need to remove Knies to get the extra upgrade from Andersson to Fox?

The extra upgrade from middle pair to Norris candidate is massive

I think we all agree that the odds of a good Knies trade being out there are pretty low. But to not even explore it would be dumb. They have a huge gaping hole on d with no way to fill it in the short term.

I just don't understand this. Wait till July 1. Maybe by then the D looks like:

Rielly Andersson
McCabe Raddysh
OEL Tanev
Andrae

With Carlo full on excess.

Where is the gaping hole in that D?

Dont you mean to say they have a big gaping hole with no d to fill it?
