OT: The Official Toronto Raptors Thread

It sounds like the raps can make a deal right now if they wanna! But they don't. They're offering Maccelli Carlo and a 3rd for Kawhi and are saying take it or leave it. The clippers are leaving it for now.

Tldr: they're doing the lof playbook. Be patient

There will be posturing and fuckery here for however long. Clippers want CMB and will pretend that they would rather have malcontent Kawhi on their team than give him up for less.

The question is whether we end up giving a 2nd first rounder to get the deal done or if Bobby stands on his business.

I'm patient but NBA trades are typically rumored for around five seconds and then immediately consummated.

Too much foreplay.

Deals get done fast usually cuz there is a lot of competition for the same dudes. In this case, it's kind of raps or nothing. So there could be a lot of patience on #bothsides

LA Guy gets forced into playing in Canada, the one place he didn't want to go to. Wins a championship, leaves to go home, 7 years later forces his way back to Toronto to end his career?

Kind of unrealistic but I'd watch that movie.

If he wants to stay in LA, why doesn't he just play out the year and worry about this next year when he can sign anywhere?

A couple of reasons. Preston touched on the first, it's kind of crazy to not have guaranteed money and go into your last season without an extension. You risk all sorts of things going wrong and leaving 100+ million on the table.

The other main reason is cap related. In the NBA, a team can't go over the cap to sign a free agent, but a re signing team can go over the cap to extend a current player. So you can't really sign "anywhere" when you're Kawhi if you want ~60 million per. It would require a team clearing enough cap space to sign you, which is pretty tricky. Like, we're 25 million over the cap right now. If he wanted to come here next year we wouldn't have the space to sign him.

I mean, he's not exactly hurting and he's near the end of his career. If life in LA is so important to him, is it worth uprooting on the small chance he has a career ending injury?
Ok I'll turn it around on you then. Even if Kawhi doesn't care about potentially losing hundreds of millions of dollars, why would the clippers not trade him and get some assets, when they've already decided that they're moving on from him?
