Wayward Ditch Pig
Good article today about how even more important than talent is to bring in good character guys who will add to the existing chemistry. Bassitt in particular quoted as saying that if you're a shitty person, he doesn't care how good you are, you shouldn't be on the team. He apparently felt that it happened with the Mets at one deadline and cautioned that adding one shitty guy will infect a few other guys and will take them all down. We kinda all knew this already, but for some reason, the way it was laid out resonating with me.
I agree with that. I think "good character" is over rated. Most of the guys who reach that level are decent enough to be around, work hard at their craft, etc. But actual bad character can be a team killer. Just a bunch of guys with no "leader" can develop a culture that can win. But inject actual bad character into anything but a bulletproof culture and it can fuck things up in a hurry.
Fwiw, if a team of guys develops a vibe, I don't think you can trade for one of those guys and graft that on to your team's DNA. Which is the "leadership" shortcut that a lot of front offices try to make. For the jays specifically, I think Shatkins deciding to get out of their own way after dismantling the latin blue jays, taking away the HR jacket, etc is the biggest vibe difference in the org now.
