The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

Yeah, I can't say I disagree with any of that. But he's lived in Denver almost 20 years and has three small kids there and was reportedly reluctant to uproot his family so maybe it's a little more emotional than that like Mehta/Jersey.

I don't know that I'd want to walk into that Avs situation tbh. Everyone over 30 now. No draft picks. No capspace. Coming off a great regular season but exposing some worrying flaws in the playoffs. Even keeping the team afloat at their current level wouldn't get him much glory, and if they start dipping then who's gonna get the blame.
It’s probably an appealing gig to one of those retread coaches with a short shelf life

But he would get paid, and wouldn't have to move his family.

So in other words, we’re getting the 11th overall pick from them next season?

Would we rather take pick 11 or they finish bottom 10 the next 2 years and the Leafs pick somewhere in the top 10 in 2028? Without know where that pick would be, what do we prefer?

A completely unprotected pick would be fun, but I honestly doubt the Avs are going to have a drop-off that’s steep, sudden and sustained enough that they finish in the bottom-10 in 2026/27 and then finish even worse in 2027/28.

Even them finishing out of the playoffs in a crappy Western conference next season would probably take a perfect storm of playoff hangover, Makar out for a significant portion of the season due to injury, other injuries + the team being sick of Bednar and tuning him out.

And then they probably still get their shit back together well enough to make the playoffs in 2028.

Of course, if they drop off next year to the bottom 10,, the pick moves to an unprotected pick in 28....

Some interesting names. Do we have assets to make a move for any of the younger names? I think Carlo gets moved but I’m not sure what his value is at this point. Col 1st is a decent enough asset to dangle. Does Carlo + 1st get you close to a 2nd/3rd line Center? Does Stolarz or Woll get you a decent asset? Or just a 2nd ish round pick. Do you keep your assets and blow all the money on free agency to fill out the roster?

McCabe - XXXX (Raddysh/Andersson?)
Reilly - XXXX (Carlo?)
OEL - Tanev

Danford, Villeneuve?, Chadwick? As young guys for depth.

from the little playoffs I’ve watched it’s pretty clear we lack high end puck moving and mobility from the backend.
