2015 UFA/RFA Talk

Huberdeau is so overrated.

My thoughts exactly , he is a good young kid but no way he is an impact player that can truly move the needle for us on the top 6

Plus I dont think he can handle the shit that comes with being a local and expected to to make a huge impact on this team

He just would have been our second best winger on the team, no big deal...

true, but if somehow the deal isn't matched, and you have him, then you have to get rid of the salary with no guarantee anyone will take those players, you could be screwed big time

Sure, but there are plenty of other ways to get screwed. You're the one who always says not to be a Cap pussy and this isn't all that different.

That is true but signing a guy three weeks before the season to whatever and then knowing you will have to shed an equivalent amount without knowing you can is a big risk. At least if it were July, there would be more time. It also would not be easy to get rid of those guys given their contracts.

I hate the cap as I think it is a restraint of trade but we are stuck with it and the scenario you set out, is likely not workable.

I'm not saying I would have done it now, because yeah it's too late now. I would have done it early in summer; more accurately, I would have done it as early as July 1st when Florida traded for Marc Savard. On July 1st, you could have easily had enough time to trade Emelin+ to make the capspace.

I like the cap because it keeps idiots like Glen Sather and whoever is in charge in Toronto from being able to fix their past mistakes by throwing money at them. The Leafs in particular haven't made the playoffs since the cap was introduced save for the lock-out shortened season. I predicted this would happen the day the cap came into effect and the Leafs have consistently proven me correct.

The Islanders have signed Brock Nelson to a three-year, $7.5 million deal... $2.5M AAV.

WTF is Colorado nuts

Then you also take into consideration that Colorado has one of the worst defenses in the league and Johnson's a UFA next summer. If they lose him for nothing, they are beyond ****ed for years. High end d-men very rarely become UFAs and outside of Tyson Barrie, Colorado has next to nothing there. He had all the leverage.

They had no choice but to overpay, they couldn't afford to lose him.

By the way, if Mike Green gets $6M x 3 years, Johnson should definitely make $6M.

I get he had them over a barrel but he is an injury prone inconsistent player , thats crazy fken money for what he brings . Green got 3 years , thats acceptable term . At some point you dont overpay and walk away , would of went no more than 5 years tops.

This is another Dion disaster in the making for caving , overpaying and regretting it later.

I don't think Dion is that overpaid, to be honest.

Dion & Johnson are in the same boat, they're #1 d-men by default. They're not real #1s, they're above average #2s. If you look at all the good teams in the league, Chicago, LA, Anaheim, Tampa, Pittsburgh, Montreal, Minnesota, New York Rangers... They would both be #2s on those teams and they would be slotted perfectly. Have players like Keith, Subban, Hedman, etc do the heavy lifting while having Phaneuf/Johnson in a supporting role. Same thing happened with Petry. Was Edmonton's #1 d-man by default, looked terrible on a lot of nights, was even scratched a few times, then he gets traded to Montreal, gets slotted properly as a #3 and he looks ten times better.

But like Petry, they're not on those teams and they're the top d-men on bottom feeding teams. It's not a coincidence.

Good points but caps are slaughtered with moves like this that bite you in the ass in a few years ...... but I wouldnt put Dion as a 2 on a contender , legit Petry # 3 but at least Jeff can skate.
