2016-17 Champions League

That Celtic/Man City game turned out to be one of the more entertaining of the season so far ... who knew? The Brodg had Celtic playing with full blown pressure right from the start and City never did really settle in. Best Celtic have played all season aside from blowing out Rangers a few weeks ago.

BTW, just for size and scope background .... I read an article over the weekend indicating that Celtic netted more cash from THAT ONE match with Man City in the UCL than they cleared from winning the Scottish League last season. Let that sink in for a minute.

The money is stupid. By making it to the Group Stage, they're guaranteed €12 million. They get a bonus of €1 million for each win and €500k for each draw.

And the take for winning The Scottish Prem?

Around 3 million euro. For. Winning. The. League. Heck, Rangers got less than half a million for winning the 2nd tier.

Wonder why Scotland is struggling? Aside from ticket revenues for those big venues in Glasgow, there's no money in it.

I know you know this, but:

England population 53 million
Scotland population 5.3 million

England's 1st division, 20 clubs
Scotland's 1st division, 2 clubs... realistically.

No wonder at all, really. When my wife goes on one of her periodic rants about how PGA players make so much more than LPGA players, I reminder her that their real business (men AND women) isn't playing golf, it's entertainment. You're paid for putting butts in the seats and eyes on the TV. If you can't build your core audience, you're stuck.

In 2013-14, Cardiff City got about $14 million for finishing DFL in the Premier League.

I'm not arguing unfairness ... I'm pointing out how futile it is for even a giant club in a smaller league to try to compete with the galactic sized clubs. You want unfairness, look at how La Liga TV money gets distributed.

I've always kind of thought about if the SPL got rolled into the EPL, would Celtic and Rangers be better off, worse off or the same. They'd have a harder time making the Champions league every year, but on the other hand, they would still be pretty big clubs and could probably make more money and attract better players.

According to Wikipedia, the EPL almost got an Irish team after they approved Wimbledon's request to relocate to Dublin. But the Irish FA killed it, as I suspect the Scottish FA would kill any deal that would see them lose their 2 biggest moneymakers. The 3 Welsh clubs playing in the English pyramid must qualify for European competitions via the English FA, as Swansea did by winning the FA Cup a few years ago. They're not allowed to play in the Welsh Cup, whose champion gets a spot in the First Qualifying Round of the Europa League. UEFA would probably do the same with Scottish clubs.

Actually, according to "legitimate" news reports, the concept of Celtic and Rangers joining the English FA came darned close to a formal vote just a few years ago. The revenue situation hasn't done anything but get worse and realistically, both Glasgow clubs belong with their more popular, polished and monied English neighbors. Nobody currently in the Prem wants to hear it though, so it will take some political oomph from somewhere to get them past the theoretical stages. And with another Scottish separation vote looming eventually, it had better happen in the next couple of years.

Honestly, the farce that is the Scottish Prem can't support itself indefinitely anyway. The money just doesn't work. Celtic and Rangers simply have so much compared to everyone else that even if a young Alex Ferguson walked in the door at Aberdeen today there's just no way he takes them to European glory the way he did back in the 80s. Celtic and Rangers not only have the cash to run effective youth academies, they also have the cash to snap up the cream of every other club's youth academy. The money disparity absolutely chokes out any realistic chance for a competitive league aside from the odd bobble year... unless you mean competitive between Celtic and Rangers. It's nuts that anyone else in Scotland actually wants this torture to continue. Since the Premier League era started in 1998, no club aside from those two has won the league title and only once did anyone else even finish SECOND while both were in the SPL, and big props to Hearts for doing that the one time. Rangers only broke that gridlock by falling prey to a financial issue and going into administration (and forced relegation) in 2012. Even that didn't really shake things up and nobody else could really muster the financial backing to fill the void, and everyone other than Celtic suffered from the lack of ticket sales generated from Rangers' absence. The all time stats table show the deal ... look at all time goal scorers. You have to go all the way to SEVENTH before you find a player that didn't spend some portion of his career playing for a Glasgow giant. Anybody who showed they were any good ... off to Glasgow with you then, son. It's a freaking joke and getting less funny by the year.

Messi had a hat trick for Barca and Man City saw keeper Claudio Bravo sent off for handling the ball outside the area.

Match Day 4 on 11/1-2

Gotta tell you ... I've seen a lot of Bravo over the years, for both Chile and Barca. I've NEVER seen him look this crap.

Oh. Despite a few flashes of hope, Celtic are officially toast. They had to take points from both Gladbach matches to have any chance at all of finishing higher than last in that group.

Group A - Arsenal and PSG have advanced. An Arsenal win on Match Day 5 clinches top of the group. Basel and Ludogorets each have 1 point.
Group B - Napoli and Benfica tied at 7, Besiktas with 6, Kiev with 1
Group C - Barcelona have 9 and can advance with a point at Celtic. Man City have 7 and can advance with a point at Gladbach. Celtic have 2 points but host Barca and go to Man City. Sorry, Bhoys, Europe isn't in the cards this year.
Group D - Atletico and Bayern Munich have advanced. PSV and Rostov each have 1 point.
Group E - Monaco at 8, Leverkusen at 6, Spurs at 4, CSKA at 2 and still alive for the Europa League.
Group F - Borussia Dortmund have advanced. Real Madrid advance with a point at Sporting. Sporting at 3, Legia Warsaw picked their first point today.
Group G - Leicester at 10, Porto at 7, Copenhagen at 5, Brugge pointless.
Group H - Sevilla win the group with a win against Juventus on Match Day 5. Juventus have 8, Lyon 4 and Zagreb 0.

Spurs seem to think they won the double when they beat City. They've been playing like the season was over ever since. Back to essential Spursiness.

As long as that continues through the North London Derby on Sunday, I'm fine...

Umm ... this IS Europe and I think even the most unrealistic of Celtic supporters knew this was the end of the road. Nice pot of gold too, and honestly they haven't looked that out of place even in a heavy, heavy group. They'll go home with a big check and their heads held high ... and figure out what to to do replace Dembele when they have to sell him along this summer.

I meant advancing in the UCL or getting to the Europa League

They've already made 13 million euros. They can add another 500k for a draw or 1.5 million for a win on the last 2 match days. Plus the market pool fund, although it will be small since it's based on proportional TV market size.
