Maybe the person's standard is cheering for local teams ? It's okay to have passion for your home town !
 
I don't really believe that there's any obligation as a sports fan to support your home-town team, even though that's what I've done. I do think you should pick one team and stick with them, though. I don't think you can really have a full appreciation of the good times if you haven't also stuck around for the bad.

That's why MNIJ, for example, still occasionally takes some teasing around here about his Blackhawks fandom. He never said a peep about the Blackhawks when they were being led in scoring (and to the bottom of the league) by the likes of Eric Daze, Mark Bell and Tyler Arnason. But then when they had Toews and Kane and appeared to be the NHL's next up-and-coming team, he suddenly had always had a soft spot in his heart for Chicago.
 
Does anyone really "pick" their favourite team anyway? I never sat down with a pro and cons list and decided which team offered a "good product". it was always the Leafs. Sports fandom is like being gay or straight. Its not a choice.

Thats why people are so weirded out by bi-fansuals like Jonas.

Thats fine but dont expect everyone to cheer for local. Thats my point.

My point isnt that people cant support their local team... its dont look down on someone who chooses not to.

Its a minority who dont support the local team but there is nothing wrong with that.

I choose montreal jn the 80s cause harold ballard was a ****ing gong show and i loved the way patrick roy played.

My opinion though is no second team and dont ever change teams.

If it's family ties okay, you have a valid point and in no way did you ever "pick" that team. Simply picking a random team instead of a local team is stupid when you have a local option.
 
Yeah I became a Toronto fan when I moved to Toronto. Regardless of where I move, or who runs the teams etc. I'll always be a Toronto fan.

When they are badly ran, I just don't invest money in them. No Leafs jerseys, no Jays' caps etc.

When they are out, I cheer against certain teams (and sometimes players); and when those teams are out, I simply watch without a care in the world who wins or loses.

Much like ME and some others, I just haven't been able to become a NFL fan due to absence of Toronto teams.

The reason most cheer for United is they were on TV/winning when people were growing up, while there really wasn't a local option (well i guess metro-croatia, Blizzards etc)
 
Schmeichel was my reason for following Man U. Played keeper all my life so I gravitated towards him
 
Started following Everton because of Radzinski and Rooney...but then my entire family supported different teams.
