2018-19 Canes Prospect and Calder Cup Winning Charlotte Checkers Thread

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

Cherkers win 3-1 to take a 3-0 series lead. Saarela x 2 (1 empty net) and Mattheos (game winner) with the goals. Ned with 17 saves.

The Toronto Marlies swept Clevelend and now await the Checkers to finish off Hershey to set up a Toronto vs Charlotte semi-final. The NHL Network last year showed some AHL semi-final and finals games so maybe the Checkers can get some TV time this year.

That would a great series I think. The Marlies have been an NHL juggernaut the last few seasons but they've finally promoted enough talent to the big club to have leveled off a bit.

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

The Marlies won the Calder Cup last year, beating Texas 4-3. They were last year’s version of this year’s Cherkers finishing with 112 points. This year, they were 3rd in the North with 91 points and, after losing McElhinney and Calvin Pickard to waivers, used 5 different goalies.

Checkers completed the sweep tonight 5-2. Saarela x3, Jurco and Gauthier with the goals.

Conference finals open in Charlotte on Friday May 17th so both the Marlies and Checkers have an extended break.

I've seen it quoted but have not confirmed that the Canes, Checkers and Everblades all making the "final fours" of their respective leagues marks the first time that this has happened with an NHL franchise and its AHL and ECHL affiliates. If that's true, that's amazing!

Poturalski is the leading scorer in the league with 5g, 8a in 7 games. Saarela and Geekie we also averaging more than a point per game.

Excellent.

A young NHL team in the Final Four, a great young stable of prospects already developing nicely in the minor leagues, and a first rounder, three second rounders as well as a third, fourth, fifth, two six rounders and a seventh in the upcoming draft!

It's safe to say the future looks bright when you look at the team and system as a whole!

Mentioned earlier but do keep in mind that we only have one real Hurricanes prospect on the Everblades ... Booth. Still, it's nothing but good for the whole organization for these guys to be experiencing success in the post season. That kind of experience is invaluable to development.

Yeah ... I really wish they'd just quit announcing the paper transactions when the players aren't physically being recalled. It just confuses people who walk into the wrong timeline.

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

Bean, Brown and Fleury were sent to Charlotte for the the start of their series against Toronto tonight. Foegele and Maenalanen are the only others eligible but I can’t see either of them going.

Games 1 and 2 are tonight and tomorrow in Charlotte. The Cherkers are running s special for tomorrow night if you haven’t had enough hockey. The series goes to Toronto on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday (if necessary).

If I wasn't heading out of town Sunday, I'd totally be in the Boj on Saturday night. If you can go and still have anything left in the tank ... do it.

Re: 2018-19 Canes Prospect and Cherkers Thread

Cherkers just tied the game 1-1 in the second. Welcome back to Charlotte, Hayden Fleury.

Mason Marchment puts the Marlies back ahead.... and that's enough for the win.

2-1, Marlies lead the series 1-0.

Mason Marchment, son of Bryan. Not his father’s son though, he only has 102 PIM in 96 games with the Marlies.

Bryan Marchment -- He probably slewfooted his bride at the altar.

Whalers lost Marchment because they signed Steven Rice to an offer sheet. Not exactly a trade, but having signed Glen Wesley to a similar offer sheet, they had no draft picks to send Edmonton's way, so they had to lose Marchment. Not one of JR's better moments, since Bryan and Glen would have been formidable on the blue line. Plus he wasn't a complete goon while he was a Whaler.

Yeah, probably true. Think the Checkers might be the more talented club. Marlies are so well-coached though. If they win it’ll be that, special teams and goaltending.
