Yeah, I mean if we wanted twenty-some points out of a bottom-sixer for $2M+ we'd just sign Brock McGuinn...oh, wait.

Fair, but no way Boyle's getting anything like $2 million this time. He's not getting that modified no movement clause either. Or at least he shouldn't be getting any of that. Pat Maroon money for a year ... tops.
 
I can't get too fussed about any squad issues at this point. We have a young team coming off a respectable playoff run that energized community support, we had good organizational depth that we supplemented with a good draft, and we go into next year's deep draft with six picks in the first three rounds. We still have issues, but I'm pretty sure over half the teams in the league would trade their problems with ours. This time last year, none of us saw the team's situation turning around like this.

Honestly, the thing that bothers me the most is that we'll still be paying Semin off for two more years. And that's on Rutherford, anyway. Let's just get to October and drop the puck. I want to watch Aho and Svech skate.

Yeah ... fair points.

I like the mix up front, as adding Huala and Dzingle to an already solid group really seems to make sense. The D is solid enough, and if you compare that group to most of the other D corps in the league then it's better than just solid. They made a few moves but nothing too big in scale, and seeing good reports on TVR's recovery is encouraging. For me it comes down to the same old, same old ... goaltending. Mrazek needs to back up a solid season with another one for the first time since the 2015-16 season in Detroit. Not saying he can't or won't do that, but until he actually does it's a risk. At least we're not sitting here hoping against hope that Scott Darling is going to somehow find his game. THAT's an improvement.
 
No but we do have to hope that Reimer finds his game. His last 2 years in Florida, his GAA is over 3.00 and his save % is below .900. It could be a function of Florida’s execrable team defense, which was 4th worst. Or it could be that all 4 goalies they used were really bad.
 
I still don't think Riemer makes it to the opening night roster. It will end up being Ned as the backup and Reimer will be traded somewhere else (with the Canes possibly retaining some salary/cap hit).
 
For me, other than Williams' situation and overall health, that's the biggest issue in camp ... backup keeper. Good problem to have, actually.

I agree. I think the Canes see Reimer and that contract as a bit of an expensive luxury with just as good and much cheaper options in Ned and/or Forsberg. I want to see what Necas can do in camp and also would love to see a big guy like Gauthier make an impression on Roddy...but I think the Canes would love to have Ned step up and grab that backup goalie job.
 
People keep saying that about Reimer, but I have exactly zero info that the staff feels that way about the guy. Fans are acting like the fact that he's on the roster was some sort of accident but we don't know that at ALL. We'll just all have to wait and see.
 
Let me put it another way. I think that Ned would have to royally screw up in camp/preseason or he or Mrazek would need to get hurt for Reimer to be on the roster opening night.

I don't know exactly how they are going to ultimately decide if Ned is ready or not, but sending him back to Charlotte for no reason other than Reimer is on the roster and Ned is still waiver exempt would be a surprise to me, mostly because of the money. That said, the SAFEST thing to do, as long as Reimer doesn't channel Scott Darling in pre-season, is to send Ned back to Charlotte no matter what and evaluate the entire situation for a month or 2. Maybe the Canes really are willing to completely ignore the amount of money being paid this season and go with 'the more capable guys we have around, the better'. I don't think that is what ends up happening, but then again, this is the first season under Dundon where we are going to spend near the cap. so we don't really know exactly how willing Dundon is to accept whatever the losses might be to allow the Canes to play it as safe as possible in goal. We will see.

The answer to the question on how much money our goalies are poised to make in actual cash should we keep all 6 with Ned, Booth, and Helvig all in the minors the entire season:

Mrazek - $3.0 million
Reimer - $3.1 million
Forsberg - $775k
Ned - $70k
Helvig - $70k
Booth - $67.5 K
 
But trading Reimer has a cost. What do we give up - besides Reimer- do jettison all or part of his salary. I don’t see the guy who bought a draft pick for 6m being willing to give up much to salary dump a guy who might have value in goal for us this season or as a trade chip.
 
I doubt there's much market for Reimer and if you do chalk up is last two seasons to that terrible defense in front of him in Florida, then the only reason not to go ahead and start the year with him on Carolina's big roster is Ned. And honestly, I've never had all that good a handle on what this organization actually thinks about Ned's readiness. I agree that he doesn't have much if anything left to learn in the A ... but that's not the same thing as being ready to carry 30-40 games in the NHL for a team that wants to be a playoff team. I'm WAY short of convinced that he's ready for that.

Bottom line ... this ain't a hill to die on or anything but I'm not as convinced of Reimer's disposability as most of you.
 
The NHL goalie market can change on a dime with a significant injury or two. Reimer may not have much of a market now but who knows come October. I can see Reimer getting dealt if the Canes were willing to eat a million to a million and a half of his salary.
 
Count me as not convinced that Mrazek can carry a full NHL season load— he’s emotional and that can cut both ways. Good to have a group you can shuffle if needed. Ned and Forsburg in Charlotte and Mrazek and Reimer in Raleigh.

The one thing the Hurricanes front office has said out loud this summer is that they want to continue to platoon goalies at the NHL level. Whether that ends up being a 50/50 split like last year or not probably comes down to results more than anything else. But that seems to be the basic plan ... which is the big reason I'm less convinced that Reimer will be shopped as most of you are. I don't see Forsberg (just not good enough) or Ned (unproven) being ready for that.
 
Considering the lack of available legit #1 goalies available via FA or trade and the exorbitant cost for what was available it seems like a reasonable approach. If one of them turns out to be the clear #1 then you’ve got your go forward plan. If not you’ve collected a number of options to try to piece something together for this season and try something else next season.
 
When Ned re-signed, I think Waddell said they’d like to get him about 10 NHL games this season. Seems reasonable.

I look at Mrazek as a 50-55 game player. His career high is 54 for the 15-16 Wings, the season before his wheels fell off. Reimer has been a mid-30s player with a high of 44 for Florida in 16-17. He needs to show that he can be the 15-16/16-17 version behind a better defense than he had in Florida. Over those 2 seasons with TO, San Jose and Florida, he had a 2.42 GAA and .920 Save %
