2019 Carolina Hurricanes Off Season Thread

When Ned re-signed, I think Waddell said they’d like to get him about 10 NHL games this season. Seems reasonable.
I think that's not only reasonable, but a good way to get exposure and gauge progress. Likely Tuesday nights against Ottawa, but still...

I look at Mrazek as a 50-55 game player. His career high is 54 for the 15-16 Wings, the season before his wheels fell off. Reimer has been a mid-30s player with a high of 44 for Florida in 16-17. He needs to show that he can be the 15-16/16-17 version behind a better defense than he had in Florida. Over those 2 seasons with TO, San Jose and Florida, he had a 2.42 GAA and .920 Save %
Exactly. Those are the two specific statements I remember from Waddell ... that they want to get Ned's feet wet with 10 or so NHL games this year and that he's looking for another healthy share of games from his "backup" again this season. 10 plus 45-55 doesn't give you a whole season ... and I seriously doubt they anticipate Forsberg filling that gap. That leaves Reimer.

Heard Elliott Friedman briefly on NHL Network Radio this morning. They were talking about Jesse Puljujärvi. He said Edmonton wants a player and a pick. Two teams with most active discussions are us and Tampa. Friedman said we were open to trading a prospect (he mentioned "like Gauthier") but were not interested in adding the pick. Did not go into Tampa too much. Said there were Canadian teams interested, but not sure Jesse wants to be in a pressure market to get his game together.

Take it FWIW.

Hmm ... interesting. For one thing, the Canes love themselves a pick so don't be expecting them to act like the Penguins and throw them around willy nilly. Second, yeah ... I get it. If you consider Puljujarvi to be a prospect/project at this stage of things, his upside is significantly higher than a lot of the tweener guys we've got in the system. You'd probably park him in Charlotte and try to get his head screwed on straight, but it's probably worth a shot. Again, if it pays off ... it pays off big. But I definitely wouldn't give away too much to get this guy. If the ask makes you uncomfortable, just walk away.

For the record, it probably makes even more sense for Tampa, depending on the prospect heading the other direction. They have very little in their development pipeline after an extended run at the Cup and the subsequent low draft position. That's a classic position where you take some shots deep in terms of risk.

Makes sense. Is another option, we take a flyer, but let him play in Finland with Aho's Dad for confidence reasons....Almost like a different farm team....and then go from there.

This all depends on Puljujarvi. He's not likely to a get any top 6 or even top 9 look very quickly with the Canes. And that is certainly not the case in Tampa. If he is willing to cool his jets in the AHL for what could be a full season and prove that he really is a high end first round talent that was just completely mishandled in Edmonton then fine, but he has be willing to pay dues in the minors to be part of this organization.

Would I trade Gauthier and a 3rd round pick for him? Sure as long as I have an understanding from Puljujarvi that he isn't going to placed immediately on Aho's wing. At best he will be on Geekie's wing for the foreseeable future.

I just saw Boardwork's post above...that would be another acceptable option.

Yeah ... if he's willing to put in the work to get his game back, either in the AHL or in Europe, that's the key to this lock. If he thinks he's going to waltz into a top 6 job straight away then I'd take a hard pass.

He's currently an RFA, so anyone's guess on what he would sign for in his next contract. Even with Williams not coming back, the forward spots are still pretty spoken for when you slot Necas in on the wing.

Aho/Teuvo/Nino
Staal/Svech/Dzingel
Huala/Necas/Foegele
Wallmark/Martinook/McGinn

How much salary would the Canes have to shed?
Nothing if you stash him in Europe or Charlotte ... which would be a requirement if I'm making that decision. No way I want him anywhere near my HNL team until he's gotten his crap together somewhere with less pressure.

Puljujarvi has claimed via his agent that money is not a hold up (any amount I believe was the quote). So something like a 1 year 2 way for $850k and $70k in theory is enough if the agent is being truthful. If the plan is to leave him in Finland all year then he doesn't even need a contract, he can remain an unsigned RFA and play out that Karpat deal and then revisit a contract the year after. Otherwise he has claimed to be willing to take short term minimal money somewhere other than Edmonton.

If I was in his shoes, that's exactly what I'd do. Play a full season in Karpat and prove to the NHL and earn a proper contract. He already knows he can be a plus player in that league. Go settle in, get back to business and then start over.

So do you make a trade now to get his rights and then hope he gets it together and hope you can sign him? Or do you wait and see and pay a higher price for his rights if he does get it together?

It'd be cheaper to acquire his rights now, as I doubt his market value will get any lower anytime soon. Put it this way ... there'll be a heck of a lot more than two teams sniffing around if he puts in some good results for Karpat.

So if things go horribly this year for the Canes, we can turn our wrath towards SiriusXMs Boomer who has the Canes ranked in his top 10 overall in his Power Rankings. We did finish 11th overall in the NHL last year, so its not TOO big a stretch to have us in the top 10 initially this season, still its just strange for us to get any pre-season respect. We will find out tomorrow where he has us ranked, I suspect its 10th.

I don't think Boomer's going to end up out on a limb by himself. He's just an early adapter. I've seen more than a couple of hints that the mainstream hockey press generally figure the Canes for the bottom half of the playoff mix in the East.

I saw a Sirius XM post a couple weeks back with Boomer attached to it that had a list of the Top 20 NHL Defensemen right now, Slavin was nowhere to be found in that list and they got pounded on Social Media for it. So let's just say the rankings from that gang are questionable to say the least.

IMHO, Slavin should be in almost everyone's Top 10 of NHL defensemen no matter you slice it.
