2019 Carolina Hurricanes Off Season Thread

There is another reason why Kase doesn’t make a lot of sense. There will still be a logjam at forward next year . Haula will be a UFA, Foegele is a RFA with no arbitration rights, Wallmark is a RFA with arbitration rights. And there will be guys like Kuokkanen, Gauthier, Geekie and maybe Mattheos ready to step in. It’s a consequence
of drafting well over the course of several years and it’s a good problem to have. But navigating the next few offseasons is going to be tricky.

Faulk is already being paid $6 million in salary this year. Based on what he brings, he is worth at least that much going forward in the open market, just not to the Canes. He definitely shouldn't expect to take a haircut on his salary in his next contract.

If with andyt here. I think prospects/picks make more sense here than a $2.6 million per year winger. If we want to flip Kase somewhere else for those types of things, even if that happens late into camp to give Necas a chance to prove he is ready I could see that making sense.

If we get a current NHL forward back it seems like it would need to be a clear upgrade somewhere. Assuming we add Case to the forward group where does he slot?

Throwing McGinn in for Case doesn’t help us much. Why not just get pick(s)?

Seems like if Faulk for Case happens then there’s another move coming. I don’t see not giving Necas a chance out of camp.

I think Faulk can get at LEAST $6m per elsewhere. Maybe a lot more. He's just not worth that to this franchise. Not today.
Yeah ... looking at potential comparables and throwing out those two stupid contracts Vancouver signed Myers and Edler to, Faulk is likely to get $5-6 AAV in the open market. I wouldn't pay him a penny more, either. Like I say, he's a one trick pony and when that shot isn't falling he's not even that. Then he's just a mediocre defenseman who doesn't defend well or pass the puck particularly well.

FWIW, Sara Civian is reporting on Twitter that Kase would indeed be involved should Faulk waive his MNTC to approve a deal to Anaheim. Who the heck knows what else might be included, however.

Ok, sure. If Kase is coming and none of our forwards are going out then we will possibly have too many forwards which is a heck of a lot better than not enough. If Necas fails to make the team then we have just the right number of forwards. If Necas makes the team and everyone is healthy then we have too many forwards making too much money to be comfortable with and someone will be shipped out.

Of course none of that happens if the Ducks and Faulk cannot come to some sort of contract agreement. With the taxes in California I would asking for a much higher salary to help offset that if I was Faulk.

Beats the hell out of the bad old days, when Francis claimed the immortal Martin Frk and Ty Rattie on waivers, doesn’t it? There are worse positions to be in than having 11 top 9 forwards.

Indeed. Or having to plug guys over their heads... Chard Larose and Patty Dwyer. No disrespect meant but I don't miss that where we are asking basically a player to play outside of his style. Good problem to have and why I think that we might see a move if Necas forces the hand out of camp with good play. I'm pulling for him because we really need his skillset out there.

I just hope they do not screw around with Necas and send the kid down if he deserves a legit shot in the Top 9 out of camp. I would like to think those days are over of ruining a young offensive prospect by not giving him the best chance to play with talented players and getting enough ice time to show what he can do.

Here's an idea. Maybe if Necas plays on that line with Dzingle and Haula, then we need to figure out who's playing with Aho and drop the odd player down to Staal's line. Personally, I would like nothing more than to see Svech Aho and Terravainen together... and drop Neids down to Staal's line. Of course that could change around... maybe when size matchups dictate so. Suddenly, you have either Neids or Terravainen playing on their natural left side next to Staal and then Kase makes more sense. At the salary he's making and if healthy, from what I see, he would be a slight to moderate upgrade over McGinn. So maybe McGinn is thrown back the other way and Terry is possibly coming back also to go to Charlotte, which would offset Necas graduating. That assumes a lot of things work out though, that are unproven.

This. We've somehow strayed into big boy franchise territory and Canes fans seem a bit stunned by having 1st world problems.

Frankly, there's 3 or 4 decent looking combinations so I'm not sweating any of it. There's none of the usual "this move will screw everything up" kind of nonsense. They've put together a deep, versatile group up front.

I am a wee bit gobsmacked to find the Hurricanes with the wealth of players we have suddenly seemed to amass-- the ability to juggle lines and pairings. I am so uncomfortable with this-- it's too good to be true. I guess this is what it's like to have an owner who will put his money on the line and I guess I am impressed with Waddell as well. I really don't think I know how to trust it.

I can fix that for you SlapShots. Peter Mrazek, James Reimer, Alex Nedeljkovic. Goaltending still on the risky side. If you think about all of the teams we are going to compete with for a playoff spot and who their #1 is you would be hard pressed to give an advantage to the Canes over many of them.

Holtby, Bobs, Andersen, Rask, Price, Vasilevskiy. Hopefully we can squeeze league average or slightly better out of our crew again. The rest of what we put together, on paper, if healthy, sure looks like a playoff team.

We have a decent stash of picks, prospects and depth to use in a trade for a goalie, if the opportunity arises. I'm still not at all sold on Reimer even as a backup. And if Mrazeck struggles, oh Lord.

Why you do that to us? Why you have to be a killjoy?

So, Montreal should trade for Kase now, to ruin the Canes trade.....lol

Btw you must admit what the writer points out might be a better deal for the Ducks. Also, I really like the stats on Kase, even if limited by injury. Hopefully that is just a process and like a guy like Skinner, he's toughed up to the rigors of NHL play. Again though, he sounds like a big upgrade over a guy like McGinn. Not sure if he can also play shut down when needed but....

Anyway... we'll see how things play out. And yeah, our goaltending is schiesse sorry. Nothing against Mrazek but I have a feeling he won't be as 'suprising' this season...
