2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

Here is something funny when Guthridge retired at UNC someone said they should not just look at hiring UNC alums to coach. The person who said that was Dean Smith! they ignored him and hired Doherty who barely lasted 3 years Doherty got off to a bad start by firing a lot of BB staffers such as admin assistants who had been there for a long time .
Doherty’s issue was following Dean Smith. There was resentment about the changes he made (I have heard Phil Ford was going behind the staffs back fomenting discontent) and the powers that be decided to get rid of him. Then Roy came in and got the glory of winning the championship with the guys Doherty’s staff recruited.
I feel like that coaching staff got screwed by UNC.
I imagine when K leaves Duke it will be the same. You can either have the previous staffs infrastructure undermining what you’re trying to do (change) or you can replace them. Either are problematic for you without instant success. I guess you could also try to be the previous coach but that seems unlikely to lead to success.

Many sides to coach Dough’s demise. He had a big issue of controlling his mouth and that also had a lot to do with him being shown the door. Same at SMU. He definitely recruited well in that one class (Felton/May) but his first year record of 26-7 was also due to players left in the cupboard when he arrived. I always felt for the guy a bit because it was going to be a tough gig for anyone and he truly loved the university but he helped crack that door open himself.

Guthridge coached for 3 years after Dean Smith and he was essentially forced to retire after 2 final 4s. Then came Doherty. Smith retired in Sept. so they would pick Guthridge to replace him and most people figured Guthridge would stay around 5 years at most.

Duke will have a lot of options after K so I don't think they will only focus on Duke alums. None of them have the resume anywhere near Roy Williams did at Kansas. I would be surprised if they hire a Duke guy

Just saying. It’s hard to follow a legend. You can’t be the legend and changes are not well received.

Gut doesn’t count that was a continuation of the previous regime

The same will apply with K unless things at Duke end very badly for him.

As for Doherty it looked like they decided to eat their own. He certainly wasn’t blameless but he was largely unsupported by what was supposed to be family. Sure looked like the guy they really wanted (Roy) became available so they kicked him and his staff to the curb quite viciously.

IMO the issue was a lot less about Lampard and a lot more about whoever manages player acquisition for Chelsea. The REALLY messed up a well balanced lineup for no good reason other than to splash cash for names. Yeah, maybe you have to move Lampard out to find somebody who can handle the jumble of mis-fitting parts they have now, but the root cause wasn't Lamps ... at least not for me.

The irony of that being that Tuchel was just fired from a club with owners who splash vast amounts of cash on players without regard to whether, as a group, they are remotely coachable.

To date the state has administered a bit over 630,000 first doses, which per the improved state dashboard is 95% of the doses received. The federal LTC program has administered another 84,000 first doses (and almost no second doses!) which is only a hair over half of the doses received for that program. So right now, the state is right at the point where we'll shortly have more people who have gotten their first dose than have tested positive over the entire pandemic. That, at least, feels like progress, although the federal program has got to be more proactive about getting to the LTC facilities.

According to the CDC dashboard, NC is getting a combined (Pfizer & Moderna) allocation of about 125,000 first doses per week (nationally, about 5 million first doses per week). Based on delivery projections from both of them, that's going to be a steady state for a while. But if the bulk of the highest-risk population gets covered in the next month or so, we can maybe start seeing a big dropoff in the ratio of mortality and hospitalization to new infections. And then do all the teachers so we can get kids back in school.

Belk in bankruptcy but saying open. I would think stores in small town places like Smithfield or Nags Head won't survive. they have 293 stores

We know the Cary Towne Center Belk store is closing at some point with Epic developing their new headquarters on that property. I assume the Dave and Busters will be history too as well, just a matter of when.

Epic won't be keeping Dave & Busters around? It seems to me that a D&B would be right in a typical Epic employee's funtime wheelhouse. Or, I guess Epic could kick D&B out and keep the space as an employee lounge and keep it stocked with all of those games.
