2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

Anyone who was worried about Christian McCaffrey on a rebuilding Panthers team can stand down. He signed a 4 year/$64 million extension, making him the highest paid RB in the NFL.
I had trouble finding out what the guaranteed money in that deal was, but best as I can tell the fully guaranteed amount is a little bit more than one year's cap hit ... so just north of $17 million. That's always the question with NFL running backs. Even the best ones only last a few years at peak production these days and the lifespan seems to be in the 4-5 year range. McCaffrey's small but tough ... but the guy takes a beating. The last couple of years of that deal are likely to be difficult for the team ... which is fine. You want to keep the guaranteed money to a reasonable amount to cover your bets, and the Panthers seem to have done that. I still think he and Bridgewater are going to be the sacrificial "faces of the franchise" while they go through a fairly painful rebuild, but at least they're getting paid for the privilege.

NCSU club hockey has a new coach. He has a lot of coaching experience , his day job is dean of students at St. Marys School.

I met Tim when he interviewed for a position at a school where I was serving on the personnel committee. Really nice dude, very sharp. I'm sure he'll keep the Ice Pack momentum going.

Albert Breer at Sports Illustrated says more than half is guaranteed. But I can’t find any details either, which is very unusual.

If the Panthers could somehow rebuild that horrid defense through the draft, their offense could actually be fun to watch when and if the NFL ever returns. A new quarterback, some new receivers and the special talents of McCaffrey along with the new offensive coordinator they brought in from LSU could be the tonic to shake things ups. They might be in some 45-38 high scoring affairs but the offense of the Panthers might turn out ok.

I‘ve seen a mock draft where Isaiah Simmons drops into their lap at 7. That’s predicated on the Giants swapping picks with the Chargers, so they can grab Herbert ahead of the Dolphins and the Giants taking an OT at 6. If the Giants pass on Simmons, I’m going to get into my car, drive to New Jersey and strangle Dave Gettleman.

If there are no fans you don't need to use big arenas/stadiums. Because the big places need a lot of people to run them. It probably won't happen but they could play at practice sites.

Classic NFL group think ... struggle to define a strict position in your stupid, ineffective system (you ARE picking early so your D ain't exactly the best) for the best defensive playmaker in the draft so you just take a pass on the guy. Kind of a flipped version of NFL group think where 30 GMs see some guy from a small school they've never even scouted look like a freak of nature in the combine and draft him 4 freaking rounds before he ought to be drafted because they forget to evaluate if the guy can actually play football.

Gettleman loves his “hog mollies”. To be fair, the Giants need an OT too, but they should be able to grab one in the 2nd round that’s almost as good as Wirfs or Wills or Becton. There isn’t another Simmons in the draft.

Honestly, Simmons is a bit off the typical physical charts, but as a player ... the kid is special. You find a position for guys like that ... or you watch somebody else do it and then you spend 5 years figuring out how to block him.

What I meant is that Gettleman likes his lineman so much that he’d pass on Simmons in favor of one of the highly rated OTs that are projected to be gone by the middle of the first round. Simmons is a disruptor on defense, the type of player they haven’t had in a long, long time.

The PGA Tour hopes to be back on June 11, with the Charles Schwab Challenge from Colonial Country Club in Ft. Worth, assuming health and government officials allow it. It would be played without spectators, as would at least the first 4 events on the revised schedule. If It plays out, there would be 24 consecutive weeks of golf, ending just before Thanksgiving.

edit: the Rex Hospital Open has been cancelled.

The toxicology report foundhigh levels of Ambien, amphetamines and morphine and trace amounts of Dilaudid, Prozac and a muscle relaxant called Baclofen. The FAA prohibits flying under the influence of any of them. He had been to rehab twice for addition to Ativan, an anti-anxiety drug.
