Six NC counties have never won a state championship in any sport. Why?

If high school sports are a source of community pride, then state championships are a tangible achievement that those communities can hang their hat on.

Interesting demographic illustration there. All but one of those counties is either really remote and sparsely populated or truly economically challenged and then you have Harnett County that really stands alone as not having an excuse for not accidentally being good enough at some freaking sport or another to win a championship at some point.
 
Tyrrell County* was the one that came immediately to mind, and sure enough, there it is. Funny how their only championship game to date is a game against Murphy, clear on the opposite side of our really damn long state.


*My wife's step-father has an old family farmhouse deep in the swamps south of Columbia, so I know the county quite well by now.

Harnett County only has 4 high schools, the oldest opened in 1978. I’m sure Lillington, Dunn and maybe a few other towns had their own schools before the county wide system. And it’s really only recently that their population boom started, roughly doubling in the last 30 years. But the total population is still less than Cary.
 
I was in Tyrrell county in Jan and stopped at a 7/11 type place . They also sold rifles and shotguns. Maybe handguns too

And some of the Tyrrell paved roads were worse than dirt roads. Because of the soil the paved roads settle and driving on them was similar to a roller coaster. My shocks got a good workout. Also a tree fell over due to wind and blocked a road but someone called the DOT and they moved it in about 30 minutes.

All fair points, but Lillington and Dunn have both been population centers since the end of the Civil War and their various high schools have always been on the cusp of decent in the major sports ... especially in baseball, which is a regional favorite. I grew up playing against Harnett teams and they were always combative and competitive. There's really no good reason they haven't won some championship or another in their size-adjusted divisions when all their neighboring counties have done so. There's nothing that holds Harnett back compared to Lee or Moore or even bloody Hoke (the Joke) County, all things considered. Just bad luck really.
 
I don't eat fish, they may have had fish but I was not looking for it . I was surprised my T Mobile cell phone worked well in that remote area. They are actually closer to Norfolk than the triangle.
 
Minor league baseball probably cutting 40 teams. Won't impact Bulls or Mudcats. In this plan each MLB team would only have 4 minor league teams. The teams that are cut could still play as independent teams. They would keep AAA , AA, and high and low A teams. Rookie league and Florida summer league would have to go independent. Burlington is a rookie league team near the Triangle.

For the record, this was supposed to be implemented regardless of the pandemic. It's been in the works for a couple of years
 
WF fired their BB coach Manning. The only odd thing is they did it now rather than last month when most coaches were axed. He was there 6 years and made 1 NCAA tourney. His best ACC record was 9-9.
 
Why would anyone want a used car with a bunch of dents and no tread on the tires?

A close friend of mine who is a consultant to the Buffalo Bills told me today that the NFL plan is a 12-game season in empty stadia with the playoffs including attendance.
