2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

XFL sold for $15 million

one year they spent 4 hours talking about nothing until FB started at noon. I guess they figured the station would be burned down if they cut off FB

11 and 17 stopped their news about mostly nothing. 5 still at it. I bet they stay with news all day.

BTW if you missed it Greg Fishel moved to West Palm Beach last week. He lost his recent job due to CV. He might get a job down there in the fall but he has some friends in that area.

To be fair, if you're one of the 300,000+ without power right now, you feel like it was a little bit more than your average rainstorm last night.

....or the trailer park wiped out by the tornado in Bertie.... still looking for the *people*, BTW.

Sounds like.... I dunno... news?

But it didn't happen in your neighborhood, so yeah...

I don't understand the hate about the local coverage. If you don't like it, don't watch it. The local TV stations do this because there is demand for the content; if there wasn't, they wouldn't do it. Plus, with all of the amazing advances in forecasting tropical systems in recent years, you never know how bad a storm is going to be until it actually hits.

Here's an idea: instead of pissing all over the hard work of others, take a moment to be thankful that the storm wasn't as bad as it could have been. This year has been shitty enough already; a bad storm would have put a lot of people in even tougher spots than they're in already.

Here's another idea: Support local media. When you wake up some day without it, you're not going to be in a good place.

I think another reason for the wall-to-wall coverage is that different folks all check in at different times. We checked in with WRAL at 5:00 and then again at different points throughout the night. We were thankful for the constant coverage because it allows us to check in and get updated from time to time.

Shockingly, my daughter in the Castle Hayne area north of Wilmington already has her power back. It was only out for about 10 hours.

It's news ... in fact, it's big news. The kind you break in to programming to cover. I get that people get annoyed with the overly breathless nature of the coverage, but jeez.

Local TV stations are big cash cows even now with all the cable channels. That's why WRAL now runs news from 4 to 7:30. Along with an hour at lunch, and more time in the AM. I read once that no channel in the US from 2-13 ever went bankrupt, maybe that is still true. They have plenty of money for things like $1 million doppler radar, helicopters, lots of trucks, etc. Local papers are in trouble and have been for a long while ever since the web took off.

Been away for a glorious beach week in Frisco. Totally unplugged. Even forgot about the pandemic. Isaias brought us back to reality.

UConn canceled their football season. This is their first season as a football independent and, as conferences move to eliminating non-conference games, this was inevitable.

the UConn FB coach is likely celebrating since he was 2-22 last 3 years in the AAC. 6-30 overall. They could still fire him but that will likely wait to next year unless he has a big turnaround. He also got canned at Maryland after only winning 10 conference games in 5 years.
