2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

Joe + Joe mentioned that LSU will have $15 million in NIL money for the basketball team next season.

That’s a little high. Most are reporting 12-13 mil because the SEC revenue sharing allots more to football than basketball and lsu was listed around 13 mil for next year

State didn’t make their info public obviously and I couldn’t find a good source from State to find out what they spent, but Carolina was around 14 mill this year including recruits. They are planning to spend 18 next year if they get a coach they can ‘sell’ to donors.

Duke reported 8-10 mill which is BS. Their collective threw in that much just for the boozers. So take those numbers with a grain of salt. Until they fix nil and actually have real numbers that have to be reported, who knows what’s actually going on

I have to say, with the spinning wheel of coaches and players, it's very hard to retain loyalty to a team. I discovered I paid much less attention to college sports in general this year than before, and I suspect I'm not alone. The fun of watching players (and coaches) grow is all but gone.

Will Wade, Kim Mulkey, Lane Kiffin. That’s some murderers row they’ve assembled in Baton Rouge.

I think it’s likely to spiral down and flame out. Even if you’re a fan of a schools that pays a lot and competes for championships. It’s a lessor pro league. What makes it better than a minor league? Now it’s a pro league with no salary cap or contracts or ability to have a level playing field.

It’s really a disgrace that the schools are so clearly going after the dollars with no regard for the idea of student athlete.

I predict the dollars will dry up because who cares if Duke wins the natty when they’d get destroyed by all of the NBA teams. At some point the fact that the only connection between the school and the team is the logo, sinks in to the point that nobody cares anymore.

This is kinda where I'm at. I don't begrudge everyone getting their bag now since it's all about the money, but as a sports fan it's not "the best college team" now, it's the minors.

I do understand if you have an attachment to the school then still cheering for the laundry makes sense; I'll still follow Michigan Tech hockey (and to a lesser extent their D2 sports). But beyond that I'll pay a *little* attention to Michigan and NCSU athletics when it hits my feed or whatever, but do I "care" anymore? Will I seek it out? Nah. I mean I go to Durham Bulls games and enjoy the night at the ballpark but it's minor pro I don't really follow or care before or after I leave the park.

Same.

Yeah, my interest in college football and basketball has plummeted in the NIL era. If it wasn't for Cornell hockey and lacrosse, my time spent following college sports would be next to zero.

I might have watched 1 Villanova basketball game from start to finish this year. They had a player where Villanova was his 5th school.

Kentucky 2020-21
Texas 2021-22
Cal 2022-24 - he was injured both years and only played 8 minutes in his 2nd year.
Long Beach St. 2024-25

That’s going to be a problem I’d think. The norm seems to be more apathy. At some point that hits the bottom line. Unless all the traditional fans are being replaced where will the viewers come from.

Gambling interest I suppose.

What a world we live in…Wade quits on his employer and the kids he asked to run through a wall for him, cannot even have the balls to tell his team and school in person and then gets paid $4 million dollars on a buyout on the way out to drag his sorry ass to LSU…

I've been having a hard time wrapping my head around how someone gets paid a buyout when THEY quit? Who the heck agreed to that on the NC State side?

Can you imagine having that benefit written into a contract with your employer? "In addition to unpaid vacation, if I quit, you also will pay me an additional full year salary..." That is ridiculous!!!

Umm … Wade’s buyout gets paid to State by LSU. Not sure where you guys are getting this flipped, although reporting on sports business IS crap these days. State negotiated the $5 million buyout in Wade’s contract down to $4 million for reasons only Boo Corrigan understands but basically it was tied to a lower annual compensation package in the first years of his contract with State. It was too low to be any kind of deterrent, so the part I don’t understand is why you’d do LSU a solid other than timing. Presumably they threatened not to make everything official until April when Wade’s buyout number drops, and thus force State to go after Wade’s buyout payment personally … which would be messy. Like any of this isn’t messy.

That said, I’m happy enough to just see the backside of that bowling pin shaped snake oil salesman. All he’ll do at LSU is what he was doing at State, which is light money on fire. Corrigan got talked into Wade last year by some of State’s financial backers, this time the hire will be Boo’s show. Which is fine. The bar is pretty low, after all. Just hire somebody who knows that you need to rebound and play defense before you start spending money on fancy, expensive guys. Virginia and Miami got that memo with new hires that State fans turned up their noses at … and kicked Wade’s guys around multiple times. So, pretty much find a guy who knows that you need an actual center on the roster and you’ll have an upgrade.
