2020 NHL Entry Draft

I feel we've been better at drafting since Churla has been on board. The timeline might not match perfectly but I feel he's bee a positive influence on our amateur scouting performance.

In general I feel that around 2016-17, things have started to turn around in regard to our amateur drafting. I'm just not quite sure who deserves credit for that, if anyone.

Unless we have access to final lists from the scouts and/or directive from management, it'll always be speculation.

While Timmins' production hasn't been great for a while, there might be a reason he's been through multiple managements. All they have to do is look at his rankings over the year, I'm sure those are readily available for those inside the organization.

There's a highly touted prospect that I'd probably avoid drafting for a long time in Hendrix Lapierre. He's a hell of a player, but he's had (I believe) 4 concussions in the last 15 months. Two in the last 4 weeks.

Sorry, when someone's one good shot to the head away from being fried, I can't draft the player.

Ryder Korczak for the 2021 draft, he's a late. Daemon Hunt might be a middle round pick. Brayden Tracey was a first last year.

In case some of you haven't seen it, this is a decent video of the 2019 draft at the Habs draft table. They were waiting on Caufield apparently.

Pretty interesting that they were getting a lot of interest in the pick they used on Norlinder but liked him too much to move it.

What’s the deal with Marco Rossi? Leading OHL in points, but not big.

Saw him a few times this year . Great vision and a solid skater

Small but built well like Gallagher and doesn't float

Playmaker like Domi was in junior but has better hands

Barring a major injury should be a lock for top 10

Doesn't take shifts off like Perfetti who is rated higher

how does drafting look for tanking vs drafting 15th

Lets start in 2012 - When we had a top 3 pick.

Best player in top 5: Morgan Reilly
6-10: Lots of okay D. Trouba, Lindholm, Dumba
15-11: Forsberg is the best. Grigorenko a big miss.
15 or worse - so what could we have had?
Actually pretty good....Vasilevskiy, Teravainen, Hertl , Tom Wilson

Recap: Hell it looks like 15-20 was better than 1-5

So no worries there. Score one for the 15 plus crowd

2013 aka McCarron is going to be good...for debates
Well the top 14 of this draft seems awesome.
MacKinnon, Barkov, Jones, Drouin all in the top 5.
Monahan, Nurse, Ristolainen, Horvat, Domi, Morrissey

After 15 it gets bad though
I guess Mantha is the best of the bunch there.

Recap: Not good to be drafting out of the top 15
Score one for tank nation.

2014 - we suck again... Scherbak
Top 5 of the draft has two great players (ekblad, leon), two bad players (Dal Colle, Bennet) and one okay player (Reinhart)
6-10: nylander and ehlers are good - rest is meh
some serviceable players from 11-15 with larkin right at 15
after 15 .... Schmaltz, Alex Tuch, Pastrnak, leaf legend Kapanen

recap: a lot of meh (even in the top 5) but the great players in top 5, in the next 10 and after 15

so call it a draw

we are at 1-1-1

2015 - juulsen

McDavid

Recap: Tanking wins.

Okay.... top 5 has eichel and marner
at 10 Rantanen

but here is where it gets interesting
Boston puts a clinic on for how not to draft at 15 (and a year after taking pasternak post 15
They could have 3 of these....Barzal, Connor, Chabot, Boeser, and Aho

Recap: McDavid still makes this a win for tanking but because of all the great players right after 15 it is an overtime win

2-1-1 for tanking

2016
Might be too early to tell but tanking is winning for sure so far - Captain Underpants, Laine (?), Dubiois, Tkachuk, Serg (hehe)
McAvoy a 14 though.... which begs teh question how the hell did they miss so badly in 2015

2017
too early to tell
suzuki at 13 though

overall
would need good drafting but it is not as bleak at 15 plus as i would have thought

Its not an exact science , but when you stink for a decade ......you cant draft

There is no excuse in year 8 how we don't have a Vancouver functional core by now as a framework all 24 and under

Petterson 1C
Horvat 2C
Hughes Top pair D
Boesner at least a borderline scoring winger

careful

count will tell you how great timmins is

Based off Craig Button's latest draft rankings (November), we'd get Jamie Drysdale at 8.

He looks real good...but is another RHD.

I don't care that he's a right D. Our RHD slot isn't going to be great in 2-3 years, which is about the time Drysdale will need. Hell, our RHD depth is atrocious right now.

Weber's old and while his play hasn't dropped off (yet), it will eventually.
Petry's getting old and if this team continues to flounders, I wouldn't be shocked at all if we traded him. A lot of people in Ottawa bitched about the Erik Karlsson trade... Are any of those people complaining now? Petry has a year left after this season and while he's still a very good player, he's not a first pairing guy. I think a lot of teams would be willing to pay out the ass to get Petry.
Juulsen might be cooked due to injuries, Fleury is a nice complimentary piece but if Juulsen was never injured, Fleury would still be in the minors.
Brook TBD. Time will tell, but he's not having an easy time right now.

That's the beginning & end of our RHD depth. There's nothing else.

Our LHD situation in the NHL sucks, but there's a good chunk of prospects coming up. Romanov stands above them all, Harris /Norlinder are interesting, Struble / Fairbrother / Leguerrier TBD, we'll see.

I always go with the BPA. A team's needs change by the time the player you draft comes into the NHL. We're stacked in terms of centers, but if the BPA on our list is a natural center, go with him.
