2020 NHL Entry Draft

I would do it in a heartbeat for #7-10. Hell, I'd do it without much hesitation for #7 and something else or #10 and a prospect. If NJD still had their second round pick, #10 + #37 would have been nice. Three early second round picks? Sign me up.

I firmly believe Caufield's going to be a great goalscorer. Not convinced he's going to be a great player, though.

The thing about the Vancouver first round pick is that, if Vancouver misses out on the playoffs, it turns into a 2021 first. I expect Vancouver to be a lot better next year and next year's draft doesn't look that great. So if we were doing that deal today, that pick doesn't interest me.

What a total farce. The league should have gone with a random draw as per 2005 ( and do same every year) and avoided all this. For all the monkeying around they have done to eliminate incentives to lose over the years, this is the result.....

They had 2 options

Wait for the season to commence and do one lottery after the 8 teams get knocked out in the play ...all teams are now in play and set your standard
lottery odds

If season is cancelled simply go by your last standings by % and do your lottery

Laf may go to a team on pace for 100 points ......totally ridiculous
 
I honestly think the whole lottery thing is getting overly complicated for no reason.

Just make it so the team that has the worst record drafts #1 overall and that they can't pick #1 overall in subsequent years.

I think that's more than fair, to be honest.
 
I’ve always been against the worst team getting the 1st overall..rewards mediocrity. Should have an open lottery every year for all 31-teams.
 
and Habs should always have the option to forego their first round pick and draft any Quebec born player instead
 
And then the Tampa Bay Lightning ends up with Alexis Lafrenière or another super prospect.

I'm more of a different opinion. I would like to abolish the drafting system altogether, if we're being honest.
 
I don't mind the current system, although I'd prefer to give equals chance to all non-playoff teams.

Abolishing the draft is an intriguing idea. Let all players be free agents and get rid of entry level contracts.

Yet the top teams won't have the cap space to sign the top prospects. It would likely balance itself out.
 
My idea needs ironing out, but it's something I would absolutely love to see implemented. A system I would like is something where there is only round allocation money, where teams have a certain amount of money they can use per round based on their standings. For example, the team that finishes last would have $6M to give on their first round pick, whereas the team that finishes 31st would have $900k with the amounts scalling from team to team. Second round, team with the worst record would have $900k, team with the best record $600k. Then third to seventh round, everyone would have $600k per round.

It would then be the free market for players to choose where they would want to sign. The amounts of money could be used on one player as much as they could be used on three players in every round.

So let's say the Sens have picks #3 & #5. They want Alexis Lafrenière really badly. Picks #3 gives them ~$5M and #5 gives them ~$4.5M. Would they be willing to offer all of that to Lafrenière? And would he be willing to accept it to go to Ottawa to make ~$9.5M?

I think it would make much more intrigue, would open up waaaayyyy more possibilities, it would open up to potential bidding wars and if the players specifically want to go to X city because it's their hometown and take less money, good on 'em.
 
Sounds overly complicated. But it did made me think about a world where all players are free agents.

I would remove the entry level contracts so that young players would get paid their fair price. I would also have the junior level FA period start on June 15th rather than July 1st. I would eliminate 2-ways contracts. Teams would no longer have rights to any players beyond their contract years. Finally I would allow teams to buyout/cut players at reduced penalties.

It would affect a couple of things.

1) Teams loading up for playoffs runs wouldn't have as much cap space to go after young players
2) Teams would be more inclined to offload big players contract to pursue young players
3) Teams would generally only go after close to ready players given the cap implications. No wasting picks on busts.
4) All young players would get a fair chance instead of being buried on a team.
5) Young players could go wherever they want. If there are willing to give up on salary to go to a challenger, so be it. But also some teams could end up with 5 first round quality players some years.
6) Lots of different strategies between going all in on a few players, or locking many promising ones with the hope that they develop later.

Former A’s owner Charlie Finley was right all along before UFA became a thing in MLB, restrict player contracts to 1-year term & make all players UFA after every season
 
That doesn't protect the player from career ending injuries then they're toast as most are stumps.

It would have to incorporate some sort of players insurance or the players association will never go for it.

Injuries should be covered by insurance, and wouldn't count against the cap, like right now, but it's also stupid to bury healthy players on career injuries just to get them off the cap. However players getting fair market value earlier in their career would also make up for it quite a bit and would be a big incentive for the PA.
