What show were you watching?

There has been no official news on a Svech signing so I expect that was speculation or someone's wishful thinking or someone leaked what the Canes have offered.

The Canes would LOVE that deal. I would be shocked if that happened. I don't see $7.5 million AAV happening on an 8 year deal, Svech would be potentially leaving a massive amount of money in the table. $6.5-$7.5 million would only happen on a 3 year bridge deal. Maybe the Canes get 4 or 5 years at $7.5 million AAV if they are lucky. If I'm Svech's agent, I don't want to go more than 3 or 5 years without the AAV at least at $9-10 million.

Svech would have to just absolutely love this area and franchise to take just $7.5 million AAV over 8 years.
Yeah ... either the term is off or the money is, because there's no way that one lukewarm season brings Svech's long term market value down to $7.5 million. But the kind of outlet that would even hint that such a deal is "done" isn't normally the kind of outlet that gets too worried about stuff like being right.

I've seen enough speculation about a 2-3 year deal for $7.5 million AAV to believe that to be the landing zone. There's no hot rush to get it done, despite what some fans want to think for whatever reason.

I think the holdup on the Svech contract is an argument over his cross ice passes.

Waddell: Stop doing that so much.

Svech: Nyet.
Similar to the conversation they're going to be having with Necas next summer.

Waddell: We'll pay you an extra million a year if you'll stop with the behind the back, off the dasher drop passes to the point on the power play.

Little Marty: (posing for a new IG post) I don't know what you're talking about

It was Mike Solarte's Friday night sports show on Spectrum. It was just on as background as I was looking at local HS football scores earlier. And right as I was getting up to go to bed the Hurricanes story came on and I hesitated turning it off the see those numbers. Then said to myself, I'll read up on it tomorrow on Forum Ice.

Interesting ... Mike doesn't tend to make stuff up for funsies. Then again, Spectrum ain't the best connected crew in the biz either. I'd still wager his report is off on either the term or the money. And my money is on the term. 2-3 years at $7.5 mil makes sense, anything longer doesn't.

Mike doesn't have any Svech news in his Twitter timeline right now, so that tells me that he has no inside info to share.

Soooo...now that Svech has been wrapped up nicely for the next couple of couple seasons, where is the team at with reference to the upcoming season's cap space?

I suspect that’s a little high, I don’t think they’ll carry 8 dmen, but Brendan Smith only saves $800k. Finding a middle 6 wing for $4.5 million isn’t impossible. Kyle Palmieri is available, unless Lamoriello has him stashed away somewhere while the Isles sort out their cap issues. He had a down year last year but had 5 straight 20 goal seasons before that.

Moving Gardiner sure would help though.

OK, so if they bury Gardiner on LTIR then they'd have a little more than $8.6 million in Cap space before adding a 13th forward. Of course, Brendan Smith could be considered a 13th forward I guess. But it's probably safer to shave a million off the space. You could always bury Smith, bring in a depth F and the cost would be roughly a wash one way or the other.

So ... $4.5 mil to play with even before doing something with Gardiner. Not sure a free agent really helps here ... including Palmieri who I think is right on the edge of being cooked and was only a 50-ish point guy in his best years anyway. I think a trade would be more likely, and the market might be a bit tight until some of the loose threads like Eichel and Tarasenko are dealt with. I suspect Carolina may end up starting the season with what they've got and then look for a hockey trade during the season.

If RBA wants to load up the top 2 lines, he could go with

Svech/Aho/Turbo
Nino/Trocheck/Necas
TBD (Lorentz?)/Staal/Fast
Martinook/Stepan/Leivo

Swap Leivo and Lorentz? Could Drury make the team as a wing? Can Jarvis make the team and push Svech or Nino down?

Yeah ... for me at least, Nino gives you flexibility. He can hold down the wing on any of the top three lines and be fine, at worst. He's great at puck retrieval, plays a steady physical game and doesn't make positional mistakes. The only question with him is always going to be whether or not he gives you goals, but even if he doesn't ... he's not a liability in the top 9.

From there ... the question boils down to the kind of player you can get. A 2nd line scorer to compliment Trocheck and Necas? A 3rd liner who's more of a two way guy to compliment Staal and Fast? I'd say you find quality for the available budget and then slot the guy where he fits best ... knowing that if you don't make a move before camp, you're still probably fine. Then if one of the kids really pops in camp, you've saved a bit of wiggle room for a look-see early in the season. I think I kind of prefer going to camp with the current group unless they can figure out how to wedge a proven scorer into the mix.

Caveat ... that's if they load 'em up. If you're just tempting Brindy to go all first line Martinook again, then for the love of God go find somebody else.

The Canes have an ECHL affiliate again. They’re affiliating with the Norfolk Admirals per their Twitter.

Anyone hear anything about the new date for STM additional single game tickets purchases and general public sales?
