2023-24 Premier League Thread

They actually ended up setting up with balanced wingbacks in possession a ton, which surprised me since Villa have only run that out a couple of times in pre season ... and none during actual competitive matches. Still, looked pretty freaking good out there. Burnley are awfully aggressive for their talent level and clearly Kompany has his team pulling in the same direction. So they're not going to be fun to play against so long as they keep up their confidence. That goal they scored showed the issues with playing in those flex formations ... sometimes you end up with too many moving parts, especially when clearances don't come off cleanly.

They weren't playing as wing backs though like they had the past two games when Carlos had come on. I did not like how the 3-5-2 looked, but this was a very clear 4-4-2 with Cash playing in the position Bailey had played the first two games. Digne has the freedom to get forward in the system and Cash usually plays fullback, so I think a lot of people misjudged it, but this was just our standard system with just a couple players in different spots. Cash looks like such a different player when he doesn't have to play that rb/cb role.

Meh ... maybe I was just noticing Digne's positioning and it was less intentional and more due to Burnley's setup. Either way, it's semantics. Clearly they want both of them to take advantage of the space in front of them when it's available. Cash was very, very good today. Remains to be seen if he can manage that for any length of time, though. He's been consistently inconsistent, regardless of role/responsibilities. I was honestly surprised they didn't bring in another RB this summer, but I guess since both Konsa and Chambers can play a more homebound version of the position, they figured they had it covered.

Mings going down week one made the defense a lot thinner and hard to find more depth at that point. Once Moreno comes back, Cash will never have to play again at left back at least.

Yeah, the only other natural LB is Ben Chrisene and he's 19. Mind you, apparently he played really well for Kilmarnock on loan last season. Still, 19.

Phenomenal outcome for Postecoglou & the project today. Going into the Emirates, playing our style of football, and leaving with two legitimate goals versus their pair of goals coming on a 90 degree deflection OG, and a freebie via a pen….is pretty damn encouraging.

Arsenal showed they were the better team early, and their press was truly world class….but Tottenham hung in and played them great over the remaining 60+.

had 60% possession until extra time, as well which wasn’t something I expected them to do away at Arsenal.

Declan Rice didn’t do anything to convince me he’s a better player than Bissouma has shown himself to be under Ange either…..Yves continues to play out of his mind so far.

Final possession was 53-47 Spurs. Rice left at halftime with an injury. Spurs did a great job shutting down Odegaard. And the penalty was deserved…the shot would have been in the back of the net absent Romero’s hand. Nice game from him…an OG, a penalty and a yellow card. Spurs capitalized on shambolic defending by Saka and a misplay by Rice’s replacement, Maddison in both cases. IMO, he was the best player on the pitch for Spurs today.

As I said, it was up around 60% prior to extra time. (10+ mins)…..which was lots of keep-away.

Rice left at halftime with an injury.

and largely invisible to that point….Bissouma played him off the pitch by comparison, imo.

insane we got him for just £30m, and Conte glued him to the bench all of last year.

he’s neck and neck with Maddison as our most impactful player this year, for sure.

Spurs did a great job shutting down Odegaard.

they similarly did a world class job pressing and forcing Tottenham to play out through the fullbacks, vs up the middle with Bissouma & Maddison. Especially in that first 30 minutes.

The rule does make a specific exception for handball occurrences committed as long as a player's body position is "a consequence of, or justifiable by, the player’s body movement for that specific situation." Then a handball is not whistled.

This exception largely comes into play for a defensive player sliding to make a block.

Nearly identical play was ruled not a handball versus Man United a couple weeks ago by Mike Dean…

…and obviously wasn’t called on the pitch in real time. But I digress….close enough to be called, so you got a freebie out of it, happens all the time.

Nice game from him…an OG, a penalty and a yellow card.

Yep, gifted you two…..insane we walked away with a sraw

Big congrats on this not being called a red. 👏🏼

think if this was anything but a NLD, or occurred in the game they’re down to 10 men.
Spurs capitalized on shambolic defending by Saka

You mean gettting turned by Maddison 7 seconds after doing Mads celebration, because he scored on a pen. 🤣

was some funny karma….think they’re mates, as Mads took a cheeky shot at him over it postgame. Saka seemed to do the celebration with a similar kind of grin on his face.

IMO, he was the best player on the pitch for Spurs today.

he was great, but I’m not sure this even cracks his top 3 performances so far, 6 games in….honestly thought it was one of his worst in many ways, as Arsenal’s speed kinda exposed his lack of it at times, which no one else had done up to this point.

Van de Ven seems to be the consensus for player of the game amongst Spurs fans, without him I think you may have score 3+ in the run of play.

Him, Maddison and VDV kept us in this….thought Sarr & Kulusevski kinda showed they shouldn’t be starting in games of this calibre. Arsenal wisely funnelled us to Kulu’s side of the pitch, because he didn’t have the speed to burn you, nor beat his man when you pressed him aggressively.

we also desperately need a creative midfielder behind Maddison in January, cause if he goes down for any amount of time, we’re fooked.

Jeff, what are your thoughts on Zaniolo? I often peruse the villa reddit on game days and most of the people there seem to love him and I've never felt a larger gap between what I'm seeing and what others are apparently seeing. He is easily the worst passer I've ever seen and I really hope that Ramsey is fit enough to take back the starting spot sooner rather than later.

In other matches, is Chelsea OK? They’re 14th in the table and, since the start of last season, have earned 49 points in 44 matches. And the home fans at the Bridge couldn’t drown out the visiting Villa supporters, singing about Poch getting sacked in the morning. They host Brighton midweek in the EFL Cup. Sheffield gave up 8 at home to Newcastle. Along with Burnley and Luton, the 3 promoted clubs have 3 points between them, Luton picked up their first ever Premier League point with a home draw with Wolves. This could be the first time in a while thst all 3 promoted clubs are 1 and done. After getting a cash infusion from prospective new owners 777 Partners, Everton picked up their first win of the season, 3-1 at Brentford. It’s in the form of a loan, until 777 are officially approved, they can’t provide an equity infusion.

Arsenal needs reinforcements in January too. With Rice and Partey out, Jorginho is the only other #6 on the roster, and he’s not nearly as effective as the others. And injuries to Trossard and Martinelli show how thin they are up front. Do you think Chelsea would take Havertz back for free? He’s been invisible.

Well, he does everything at a high level except pass ... and having a bigger body in that slot means a lot to this group. No telling if he hangs onto his much playing time once Ramsay gets fully fit, but I get why he's out there in the meantime. He's a load.

yeah my buddy is an Arsenal fan and he’d already happily give Havertz up for nothing just to keep him off the pitch.

The thinking was that he wasn’t deployed correctly at Chelsea as a striker or wing and his best position was as a left side 8. When the team is operating like they did against PSV on Wednesday, Odegaard runs the midfield. Havertz only had 46 touches and only 2 attempts into the final third. With the way that Arteta deploys Zinchenko, who is often in central midfield between Rice and Odegaard on the attack, Havertz has defensive responsibilities that he’s just not up to.

Havertz is one of those guys who has a very narrow skill set. He's got serious game, but only when used in a very specific way ... and if you ask him to do anything else he'll only frustrate everyone. IMO England is the absolute worst place for him.

Both Chelsea and Arsenal were looking for the guy that had 29 goals in 64 appearances his last 2 seasons at Leverkusen. But the last of those was the 2019-20 season.
