Looked to me like he went over the ball and it escalated the contact and took away some of Jones' control of the situation. IMO that's enough to turn a red card yellow, but that booth didn't exactly cover themselves in glory today either way.
the disapproved goal was a complete clusterf***k. It came down to poor communication between the field and the VAR official, Darren England. He thought the goal had been given on the field. But it wasn’t. So when he told Simon Hooper that the check was complete, that confirmed the on field decision and he thought he confirmed a goal. Just awful.

Honestly tho, this is the best possible explanation imo…because it was made so quickly, and no line was shown, it tracks with him “agreeing” with the correct call of a goal.
It’s an honest mistake, and a brutal one….but I’ll take that over them actually reviewing it and saying it was offside in two seconds, without even a line to “prove it”.
again, it sucks…but no different than the kinds of in the moment mistakes we used to see pre-VAR. (like a linesman saying this one was offside in real time, is totally the kinds of errors we use to see fairly regularly).
So is there no process whereby England could have radioed down to Hooper and essentially said “no, it’s a goal you dummy” when he saw that it had been chalked off? If not, that’s a problem.
In other news, Kai Havertz opened his Arsenal account today, taking a pity penalty that Odegaard and Saka discussed before handing him the ball. Tyler Adams was not in the squad for Bournemouth and he’s suffered another injury setback, according to manager Andoni Iraola. It’s still his hamstring. He had just returned to training.

strikes me that’s where they “swallowed their whistle”…..but will be interesting to hear how the events unfolded after they realized the error, and what they did/didn’t do next.
It is kinda ironic how apoplectic everyone is over this, when majority of those same people claim VAR is ruining the game…..when this exact play is the kind rectified 98% of the time thanks to VAR.
We used to see this identical type of play botched on field by linesman weekly back in the day.

It's a sad state of affairs in football these days as every club has its mouthbreathers with their minds trapped in the 19th century.
As for the match, it's too bad the horrible officiating and VAR controversy takes away from what was (until the second sending off) a breath-taking match. Spurs should be getting all kinds of plaudits for their overall excellence but instead, this nonsense gets in the way. I'd forgot all about Yves Bissouma, who was magnificent. And that backline partnership you and I spoke of, Montana, with van de Ven and Romero, was excellent. The revelation to me, though, was Udogie, who was immense.
My biggest anger, though, isn't with the obvious VAR error. It's why they chose Simon Hooper as match official when many of us think he's not EPL ready, let alone good enough to officiate a match this important. Horribly out of position much too often and it showed. In fact, before the match I told my wife either one of fourth official Michael Oliver (obviously) or VAR head official Darren England would have been a far better choice for a match of this magnitude. Even a sleepwalking England is probably a better choice that Hooper. And I wasn't wrong.
Still, kudos to Spurs for finally breaking our resolve and winning the match. The rematch at Anfield at the end of the season will be electric, I'm sure.

I realize it’s still an issue in the US and to a slightly lesser extent in Canada…..but the amount of it after Footy matches blows my mind, including in the stadium or even via chants sometimes. (Lots of anti-Semitic ones sung at Spurs squads/fans over the years.)

Was everything we’d hoped for in those first 20 minute….some incredible pressing, gorgeous press breaking passing in tight areas, and then beautiful end to end galloping…..fact it was broadcast in 4K too, just felt like we were seeing an instant classic of the young upstarts Vs the established team they one day hope to be.
I understand all the love & attention Maddison has gotten this year, as will always be the case with gifted offensive players….but Bissouma has been without a doubt every bit as important to our turn around as Mads.
You can have your £100m+ Declan Rice’s or Canceido’s….but age aside and just going off on field play, I wouldn’t swap Yves for either of them right now. No one puts in a better shift game after game, minute to minute than Bissouma right now….we’re nothing without him this season.
Im so torn, but atm it’s between him, Maddison and VDV for my next kit.
Van De Ven put on another great performance eh….had some great moments out wide against Saleh, flashed his (maybe league best?) makeup speed not only beating some players back to a ball, but overtaking them once or twice. He lacks quality in the air, but otherwise he’s so fast & nimble on his feet for having such a big frame it’s something else. His timing on tackles and poise under pressure has been really impressive as well.
(Argument could be made he may have been a step late to Gomes tho, and made contact with the body before the ball
He’s already one of the top LB’s in the world imo…having seen him go up against Saleh, Jota, and Saka these last two weeks has only confirmed that for me. Still work to be done, but he’s been so good so early, I’m already dreading the day Real Madrid comes calling,
Oliver calling that game would have been ideal.
….and while I think the VAR mistake is inexcusable, the fact someone didn’t act to rectify it once the mistake was known…(either VAR official not calling down to the field, or Hooper swallowing his whistle because he felt the correction was made too late)…..is 10000% inexcusable.
Original mistake, I can understand happening (but protocols need to be put in place to make sure it can’t again)…..but not stopping things to get the call corrected, even if play had restarted…..not acceptable.
I think the reds, despite killing my buzz on one hand (I thought even after the first one it had kinda killed what was going on, even tho some moments of brilliance still occurred)….we’re in isolation understandable.
the VAR methodology, (which should maybe be questioned/changed)…..of watching replays in slow mo, and seeing freeze frames of the moment of impact, meant Curtis Jones was getting a straight red more often than not. In the moment tho, I even said if you just watch it at full speed it’s probably not given because the influence of going over the ball is so obvious.
that said, it’s done how it’s done, so it was gonna be a red once reviewed.
Jota’s were more just shit luck…..I think if you switch the order all his fouls occurred, he doesn’t get a second yellow. But his most egregious foul occurred, and he didn’t get booked, just a warning…..then he clips Udogie moments later accidentally, but quite demonstrably visually (despite barely making contact)…..because of Udogie going from mid sprint to tripped. So I think the warning followed up by this so soon after is why it got a yellow…..and the Jota made an inexcusable and probably frustration fuelled error with his next tackle that left the ref little room but to book him again. Was really moronic…..but had that happened before the trip, the trip probably isn’t booked as a second yellow imo.
order of events kinda screwed him/Liveerpool.

I think Klopp learned a lot about his team coming out of that, and their potential for digging in and defending when the game is on the line….and it may pay dividends when holding a 1 goal lead late on the road or against a top 6 opponent later on…
also think Ange learned a clear issue with our current set up, which is a difficulty breaking teams down if they park themselves deep and aren’t pressing you, to open up lanes. Our lack of creativity in the final third once you sat deep, was embarrassing. So he’s got to really improve on that, or we’ll struggle versus lesser teams who do that all game, or quality teams who may resort to it up a goal late.
Happy to get 3pts from such a tough fixture, nice to have the monkey off our backs of finally beating Liverpool in our new stadium…..but it’s hard not to feel like we all got robbed of seeing a classic. IF we ever could have beat you 11 v 11, it would have been a million times more satisfying. Annoyed we got robbed of the chance.

Back to the football for a moment , Chelsea looked much better tonight in the first half. Mudryk with his first since his huge signing last year, and Borja getting Tim Ream to kick the ball onto his shin for the second. The Chelsea players, apart from Mudryk, who impressed me tonight were Ollie Palmer and Levi Colwill. Palmer just seemed to know how to pick out the right pass, which included several dangerous chances that a more clinical side would've potted at least one more. And Colwill laid in a beauty for Mudryk's maiden goal.
Second half, Fulham improved but they haven't made much of their forays into the final third. In the 84th minute it looks it will end 2-0 Chelsea
