2024-25 NHL Misc. Thread

...and bring back The Alibi Lounge, Scramble Dog, Bullshippers, or whatever you want to call it, not far away on Western Blvd.. That place was a dive, but it was a fun place to catch music. I sorta saw David Allan Coe there one night and he was too drunk to sit on a stool to play music, so they cancelled the show.

I am kind of surprised there aren't more rinks in the Triangle area. We've got the SportsPlex in Hillsborough, though there really should be 3 rinks. Ice time has gotten expensive and hard to come by these days as well. The ice takes a beating and never gets much chance set after resurfacing, so it becomes crap again not long after.

Lots of speculation that Carey Price is going to be traded today, after the Habs pay his $5.5 million signing bonus. His salary is $2 million and he has a $10.5 million cap hit.

So, without Price's cap hit Montreal drops to $4 million and change under the cap, which would free them up to add during the season or make a deal during camp if they want. I mean, they can still do that with Price in LTIR so somebody would need to make it worth their while. Vegas is over the cap, but it sounds like they can LTIR Pietrangelo. Florida is also over, but if reports that Tkachuk will be out until January are true then they can at least kick the can down the road until after the Holidays. And NHL freaking love to kick a can down a road. Supposedly the rumors have them trading Price's contract out west, but, again Vegas doesn't make sense. Maybe Edmonton needs the room to make a move at goaltender? Everybody seems to be over the cap floor, so that ain't the issue.

So who exactly is ready to pay substantial player/picks/prospects capital for this LTIR space that pretty much nobody actually seems to need? I mean, if you need the space then $2 million cash is no big deal. But I'm just not sure who needs the space, or to what specific end.

BTW, I'm not saying that Montreal won't move Price's contract this summer/fall. It would be in their interests to do so ... so why wouldn't they? I'm just not convinced about who has an obvious case to justify acquiring the contract.

Too long, didn't watch ... third? I'd guess the NY Metro teams dominate viewership and thus poll responses. But maybe not, as they do prefer outlets that blow smoke up their butts and THG ain't really that dude

Personally, I think it's Carolina and New Jersey at the top if the Devs can stay healthy and Markstrom doesn't hit one of his down cycles. I'd tip it to Carolina since they have less ifs and maybes and are better coached. The Metro has filled with the Atlantic and is now the weaker Eastern division, I think. So the better teams could pile up some pretty cheap points.

Spoiler: first place in the Metro. Then it's Warshington then the Devs but with caveats on their health. If they're healthy this year, the Devs will be atop the Caps. Then the 'jerks, Jackets, Islanders, Philly then the Pens.

That's in line with my general thoughts. I think Carolina, NJ and Washington will be tier one, while NYR and Columbus battle for a wildcard slot. The rest is flotsam until proven otherwise.

If Dandy Don could find some goaltending I really like the young kids and the core that Columbus has been building! They just have too many solid young players to not be a playoff team, poor goaltending did them in down the stretch but they were awfully close last year to getting in the big dance.

Saw this on twitter and thought it was interesting. MacKinnon goes through 400 sticks a season. They can’t all be broken, maybe after repeated use, the carbon fiber stretches and it loses its stiffness? At retail, that’s more than $120k. Not that he’s paying retail, of course.
LOL…I’ve used the same stick playing beer league for about a decade!

Yeah, I don't think that's Florida's plan at all. I think they want to get him healthy and apparently that means he's got to be out for a good chunk of the upcoming season. We can't just call shenanigans every time somebody legitimately gets put on LTIR.

When this change was announced, I think someone went back and looked at Florida’s roster and found that their playoff game day roster would have been compliant had the new rules been in place. PuckPedia lacks a historical view, or at least I can’t find it, so I can’t recreate it with last year’s roster.

There was a blurb in one of the online services ... maybe it was one of the guys at Elite Prospects. But yeah, Florida was absolutely cap compliant last season, and unless I mis-remember, they never even put Tkachuk on LTIR last season. Pretty sure he was on regular IR. Also, they're only $3 mil over the cap now if you allow for a regular roster. Puckpedia has them with 15 forwards, which ain't gonna happen. It's hardly gaming the system territory when all you have to do to get complaint is trade away one moderately paid guy.

The LTIR thing falls dangerously close to the no sales tax States in the list of crap people whine about just to whine about something.

Jack Roslovic still without a team and it's now September...he may have to lower his demands and expectations at this point. The only other guy out there as a UFA unsigned that seems a bit surprising is Matt Grzelcyk. The two Russian goalies in Georgiev and Samsonov did not even get a sniff at a job yet, so some team that gets a goalie dinged up early may still come calling I guess.

And the KHL season has already started, so Georgiev‘s and Samsonov’s options are pretty limited.

I had assumed that Roslovic would end up in Toronto eventually, now I'm not so sure.

I read something a few weeks ago that said the Canes have continued to express interest in Roslovic. So even though our roster already seems to be completely filled up and then some, that doesn't necessarily shut the door on another year of Roslovic with the Canes. If you are a Roslovic fan and want him back with us, working to his advantage is the whole 'Right Handed faceoff/center' situation.

I don't know how the Canes would fit Roslovic into the roster, so that seems to be a big blocker along with the fact that the Canes probably don't want to sign him for more than 1 season and he got benched for a large chunk of the playoffs. He will be very lucky to find a multi-year contract anywhere now for the money I suspect he was asking for.

I would not mind bringing him back for the right price. You can never have too much quality depth in this league as the canes have found out themselves over the last few years. If he’s willing to come back at our price and understand his role, then they’d be crazy not to bring him back if it’s truly an option
