ACL and MCL injuries, out 7-9 months. Which is either the beginning of April or beginning of June. If they think he can be back for the playoffs, they get $3.8 million of cap relief through LTIR but he can come back for the playoffs. If they take the whole $10 million, he’s out until next season.

My son had his ACL replaced and his MCL repaired, took him about 8-9 months. Surgery around Halloween, declared fully rehabbed in July.
 
The double whammy probably takes the whole season off the table for Barkov. Which absolutely changes the playing field in the East.
 
Leafs sign goalie Anthony Stolarz to a 4 year/$3.75 million AAV extension. He’s in the last year of a 2 year/$2.5 million AAV contract the Leafs signed him to in 2024. He’ll be 36 when the contract ends.

Absolutely no reason for Anaheim not to have wrapped that up earlier if they were eventually willing to go to $7 mil AAV. I'm far from convinced he'll end up being worth that much, but it's not like that kind of player is easy to get on the market. Carlsson's next deal just got very interesting.
 
Interested to see how Florida plays this without Barkov. They CAN just go with Bennett, Luostarinen and Lundell centering their top 9, but that plays havoc with their checking line and is really big ask for Bennett. They could probably slot up Samoskevich as well, but that's also a huge ask.

And the bigger question remains on the new LTIR rules hitting the post season this year in relation to this injury. Do the Panthers risk hoping Barkov is fit to play for the playoffs at some point and absorb some of the cap hit or do they say he's probably on the shelf for the year with that knee and get the full $10 million cap relief to go out and spend it however they see fit to fill the hole?

Well, it's not like they're going to able to go trade for a No. 1 center whether they have the Cap space or not. And they've spent a ton of trade assets at the deadline over the last few years so even if there was such a thing available, they'd be hard pressed to have anything to trade for it. Plus if they set their sights on a 2C just to get by, then they run into the fact that two thirds of the teams in the league are also looking for one of those. So I don't see that as as huge an issue as some do.

But hey ... I've seen writers throwing them in the (probably fictional) Sidney Crosby sweepstakes.
 
Basically the same as the deal that Kaprizov reportedly turned down earlier, so they must have tweaked the details or something. Everybody is going to be talking about the up front money in the form of signing bonuses, but that's where the high end contracts have been headed for a while now.
