2025-26 NHL Miscellaneous Thread

Florida is firmly stuck in that tar pit just past the edge of logically being a playoff contender. Problem being, they’re stuck there with 4 other teams, all of whom think they’re gonna be the one to get hot and get back in the race. Columbus got white hot for a couple of weeks and still didn’t escape the mosh pit. They just moved to the front of the line to nowhere. There’s something to be said for where the Devils and Rangers find themselves, because they’re far enough out that there’s no room for delusions.

The Kings fired head coach Jim Hiller and named associate DJ Smith as interim for the rest of the year. They’ve fallen to 5th in the Pacific, 3 points behind the Kraken for the last Wild card spot.

Smith seems like a true interim coach and nothing more until they can get a true long term option behind the bench. You have to wonder if De Boer might be the leading candidate for that LA job.

Lots of waivers activty today. Edmonton waived Andrew Mangiapane and Alec Regula, Vancouver waived Guillaume Brisebois, the Blues waived Robby Fabbri and the Panthers waived Luke Kunin

Mangiapane is interesting. He’s got a full no move clause for some stupid reason, but has been a terrible fit in Edmonton. He’s also singed through next year at a good million bucks more than he’s worth. Regula is also interesting. He’s still young, is still in the RFA cycle, has good size and is a right D … all of which reads value. He’s been a point producer at the AHL level but has never found an NHL slot, really. He’s actually got a plus expected goal share, but his actual goal share numbers are awful.

Wait. THAT little crosscheck hurt him? Dude is literally made of tissue paper at this point.

Panger reportedly asked Letang how hard he hit him, when Letang returned to the bench. Letang reportedly said he barely touched him.

I mean, maybe his shoulder popped out of joint. That can happen if it’s already screwed up and basically every NHLer has screwed up shoulders. Otherwise … no clue

The Blackhawks sent dman Connor Murphy to Edmonton for a 2028 2nd rounder. Chicago retains 50%, he’s in the last year of a contract with a $4.4 million cap hit.

There was a lot of talk in Chicago about the Hawks trading Murphy to a contender to throw him a bone for his years of service during their dark days. Sounds good until you realize they traded him to probably the most dysfunctional D Corps of any current playoff team. Oh, and the expectations are still Cup or Bust even though the Oilers have been garbage all season and are lucky to be the last WC in the West. Some parting gift, that.

I adore that he even bothers to get up to speed before slowing down immediately upon reaching the puck. He’s only doing it to amuse himself, which makes it all the better. I used to hate this crap before he played on the Canes and now I’m converted to full sicko mode for unconventional shootout attempts

Dreger says it’s a buyers market. Based on some of the rumored asking prices, I’m not so sure. He also says Thomas to the Slugs is heating up.

Honestly, Buffalo makes perfect sense for Thomas but with a full no move, he’d have to be on board with it.

Also, these “asking prices” are just what's getting leaked to plugged in reporters. Speaking of which, LeBrun is trying to test out a market for John Carlson just like he tried to do for Tom Wilson a few years ago. That’s just a GM testing the feedback loop
