2025 NHL UFA/Trade Thread

Pittsburgh needs a considerable return on this. Otherwise, why bother? They will be in the McKenna and Dupont sweepstakes and they would have 87 to pass the baton.

Adding some B grade vets can done via free agency. If Crosby can’t leverage Grade A returns, they should just keep him.
How would it be better for Pens to simply end up w a late 1st rounder + B- prospect at deadline? Because if they don’t deal him before season starts that’s all they’ll end up w at deadline given 87 has ALL the leverage

Legalities apply in employment. You can morally detest them all you want but you can't ignore the legalities.

So, there’s the legal issue, as you correctly state, and the “cohesion” issue which is outside the legal parameters (I think?).

In terms of the law, as a layman, it seems to me the matter is settled and there is no legal basis to bar them from making a living.

On the other hand, there is the Mitchell Miller situation in Boston where some of the senior players rebelled against his contract. So, that’s a question, I think, of “good fit”. That’s not a legal question, but rather a question of judgement. (Is that correct? There are provisions in employment contracts that pertain to these kinds of situations, but the ink was barely dry and it seems like a weird situation in terms of sequence.)

So, this will be a case by case situation, largely based on a question of judgement. Some of these guys might come back, some might not.

Edit: I see that Miller was found delinquent in a juvenile court for his actions. So in terms of “legalities”, he had already crossed a threshold that the London 6 has not.

Crosby is like Yzerman/Lemieux/Sakic…..1 team and that’s it….does he really want to “risk” tarnishing a bit of his legacy by joining another team (and probably not winning the cup)
Different situations, Yzermsn/Sakic had competitive teams up until the end. Lemieux was the owner.

Crosby is a competitor, I doubt he want to end his career playing for a bottom feeding team.

Trying to bring the Cup back to Canada would be a nice cap on his legacy.

There is a legal argument for having the suspensions lifted but even then, of the league wanted to, they could probably still keep them suspended due to the fact that their actions, notwithstanding their legality, nonetheless brought the NHL into disrepute. They negatively impacted the league's brand and they can still be punished.

But what would be easiest is for the suspensions to be lifted and then for every team to ignore them and not sign any of them until they go away. The Kaepernick treatment, in other words.

Miller is an interesting case. Under normal circs, his offences as a minor would be sealed but there was a leak. He bullied in middle or high school, not normally something you pay a long term price for but he bullied a black developmentally delayed boy and the story came out in aftermath of George Floyd (iirc that Aliu guy jumped on the story) so the league came down hard on him. Freezing him out of the NHL seems out of proportion to the crime.

NHL makes more money now than before the arrest, no brand damage has occurred

We already know the Leafs are scum of the earth. Their arena ushers raped boys and now they want to sign rapists to play for them. It tracks.
