I think both sides played it slow to gauge interest from other teams, but it would have taken a massive offer to make them movie it, which is why all those low balls offers were ridiculous.
 
Latest BS rumor on X today is that we're trading Price's contract as part of a deal that will bring Jared McCann to Montreal (I guess to be the 2C)

I know McCann has played center, but isn’t he more of a winger?

That's the same as assuming that Crosby would sign with the Habs. It's faith-based hoping, not analytical thinking.

If McDavid wants to win he will go to a team with a real shot at it. That team will never be the Leafs. He's going to re-up with the Oilers but probably not for longer than 4 years. By the end of that deal he will pursue Cups elsewhere. Matthews will have left the Leafs by then also.

No team was dumb like Nero to offer a fair contract on an offer sheet

Ducks have no cap issues and it would require a stupid offer that he isn’t worth to even consider not matching
