Around the League 2019-2026 Edition

Tbay: 54.5 (4)/54.0 (6) ain't bad

The Avs were a juggernaut and then went all in at the deadline. Kadri as a 3rd line C is something else.

Why do you think I'm rooting for Vegas?
Ya they were good, just obviously a good bit below the cup winning/presidents trophy winning Tampa teams of the past. But juggernaut Florida and Toronto fell off and were replaced by teams that are nowhere near as good imo (Boston and Buffalo both kind of suck). It was an easier ride for the east. Not to mention how bad the West is.

Some years there just aren't a slew of juggernauts, like when the caps won the cup, for example.

Tldr: Habs can and will take advantage of this and win the cup!

You can't expect to make meaningful change in the offseason, especially on defence. You need to have the assets to jump on an RFA, or capspace to absorb a player/contract that has been pushed out by a younger player on another team. Tre tried to get his work done in the offseason, and then sat on his hands all season when things were clearly not working.

But we have all of those things. We have cap space, and we have enough assets to swing a single decent sized trade.

We don't have a pile of 1sts to throw around in trade, but we definitely have the cap & assets necessary to add a few top 4 defenders. There's a lot of teams who missed the playoffs and have expensive 30+ yr old defenders as well. Severson, Montour, Pelech, Pulock, Hamilton, Gavrikov, Faulk, Fowler, Josi, Skjei, Morrissey, Pionk.

Some GM somewhere in that list of assets is going to look at the younger, cheaper Carlo and be interested.

man we fired treliving just in time. this awful year was a gift tbh.

replacing mitch with mckenna literally fixes treliving's biggest fuck up and only truly longterm disaster.

and while there's still a bunch of crap on the roster the actual bad players are on deals that are movable without much pain.

if treliving had been allowed to spend all our capspace this year we would have been 100% fucked for the rest of matthews career. as it is, we avoided having him make any crushing longterm moves other than losing Mitch....which is now miraculously fixed as if it never happened.
He was so dumb he didn't even trade for a guy or two in exchange for a pick to use up the cap space this season. Why did we go past the deadline with almost $2M unspent? Biggest moron ever. But at least, per his post-deadline comments, he was going to come up with a plan shortly.

That was a weak version of prior Florida teams! No one this year is the Florida Panthers. Maybe the Avs are close but it's hard to tell in the west. Canes are realgud too but they'd get rinsed by last year's Florida!!!
The one year Boston and Florida were down and out, and TB weaker, we miss the playoffs.

Not sure Carolina would've been toppled, and definitely not sure Avs are beatable, but if there was one year we could've advanced to the eastern finals, this was it.

Habs are in good shape. We'll see if they ever get to elite but they've got lots of talent and all their bad contracts are up soon and have a gm that won't get them back into cap trouble.

Buffalo not as much. They're not that young, they're still in tough to keep their own guys, and i still have no reason to trust their management.

Panthers will be back next year, though they'll be almost a full team of 30+ year olds so time is ticking.

Bolts are harder to figure - their underlyings were amazing this year, their top guys are still scoring at incredible rates, but for whatever reason that team never really pulled it together this year the way i thought they should have. And now they're gonna start legit losing significant pieces to cap and age.
On the broadcast they said Buffalo is the second youngest team behind them.

yeah they don't have many old guys but don't have many really young guys that they can expect much natural growth from either. Only 1 guy of significance under 24 in Benson, and a mid prospect pool.

montreal's got Hutson 22 Slaf 22 Demidov 21 and a couple real nice prospects that you'd expect have plenty of room for improvement.

Average age is overrated. Average age of your best 5-6 players is where it's at. Buffalo's best 5 players are 25, 29, 28, 26, & 23. Which isn't old, but it's not like that's a group of kids either. That's not much younger than a Matthews, Nylander, McKenna, Knies top of the lineup.
