Meanwhile every elite athlete is open about how they're nazis about their sleep quality.

I'm sure it's more advanced than just - get more sleep... and likely individualized based on sleep and performance data.

Listened briefly, and the doc mentioned that teams started bringing him in to assess players, but also started using their sleep habits against them in contract negotiations.
 
the west coast teams complain about travel, but i'm pretty sure east teams playing later out west is a bigger negative than west teams playing earlier out east, even if the west teams have to travel more often.
 
Ignore if you're not a nerd like me. But I found this unsurprising but interesting. I'm paraphrasing but:

Mehta: "we did a bunch of research on positions, in terms of how important it is to have forwards on their strong side (the way they shoot) vs their weak side. And one of the things we found when it comes to forwards is that there's basically no positions. If I showed you a heat map of where guys are on the ice, it would be impossible to tell which wing they play or if they play center. I think it's different for d and maybe a little different for forwards in the dzone, but outside of that, there's basically no positions and I feel the right wing vs left wing stuff gets overblown sometimes."

Fully agree. I've sort of studied myself in this regard all my life. I'm a lefty shot and there are times when it's better to be playing RW and there are times when it's more advantageous to be playing LW. I see it in my own play. The thing is, you can't plan for it. The game flow is organic and it'll be better at times and worse at times to be playing a particular position throughout the game.

Even the Dzone stuff has always come down to whether or not the winger is on his strong side for clearances, but imo that's a secondary skill to body positioning, winning 50/50's, etc. I think it's hockey logic that comes from a time where "up and out" was the pinnacle of winger defensive play when puck possession systems ask wingers to do more with the pucks at the half boards than just to get the puck up off of the glass and out of the zone.
 
Yeah to be clear he said it's easier to tell who the LW and RW are in the dzone based on heat maps, but didn't mention whether it's important for them to be on their strong side or not or that there's a measurable advantage. He didn't sound overly convinced of the importance tho. You can tell the guy loves the smell of his own farts when he talks about this stuff. But it's nice to see a nerd be forthcoming, because Tulsky certainly says jack shit.

Martin St Louis agrees!

"If you exclude faceoffs, hockey is much less a game of positions than it was 20 years ago. We want our defensemen to be comfortable joining the attack. If we want them to be aggressive, our forwards have to be able to play on the other side. It's about replacing each other."
