he's been very good for us this year. But he's a backup quarterback at the best. We still need to draft a franchise quarterback. I have so much respect for fitzpatrick though he's been playing very well but he's not a franchise quarterback that we need.
:iagree:
If we are in position to draft Luck then you draft him. Fitz has been great so far being the starter but I'm just not convinced.
The Bills put in a waiver claim on Shawne Merriman at midseason hoping to jumpstart their pass rush with a Pro Bowl talent. Though an Achilles injury prevented that from happening in 2010, the Bills ensured they’ll have the outside linebacker for 2011 and beyond.
Buffalo signed Merriman to a new contract Saturday.
“We had been working on it and we agreed on it and got everything signed this morning,” Bills GM Buddy Nix told Buffalobills.com. “I know he’s a leader. He’s been a Pro Bowler. He’s only 26-years old and if he’s healthy he’ll make plays for us and help us win games.”
Health has been an issue for the three-time Pro Bowl linebacker the past two seasons with knee, calf and Achilles ailments respectively, but Nix is encouraged about Merriman’s outlook heading into next season.
“The prognosis for him is good for him to be healthy and ready to go by the time offseason workouts roll around,” said Nix.
Nix, who was heading up San Diego’s personnel department at the time the Chargers drafted Merriman in 2005, believes he can be an answer to Buffalo’s inconsistent pass rush. The pass rushing linebacker played in San Diego’s 3-4 defense since he was a rookie in 2005 and racked up 39½ sacks in his first three NFL seasons. That’s why it was Nix’s intention from the start to keep him on Buffalo’s roster long term.
“I don’t know who else had that in mind, but I did,” said Nix. “I’ve seen him when he’s healthy and I know what kind of player he is.”

Whoever said the Buffalo Bills never catch a break clearly didn't have a case to make after Sunday's games.
With a grand total of four games going the way the Bills needed them to, Buffalo moves ahead of Cincinnati in reverse strength of schedule, and will be drafting third overall in late April of 2011.
How exactly did it happen? Well, since all three four win teams lost, that means it came down to a numbers game between them. Denver far and away had the worst schedule of the bunch, so they are the second overall pick by a landslide.
But coming in to the day, Cincinnati actually had a worse strength of schedule than the Bills did.
Because of the decision by Roger Goodell to go exclusively with divisional games in the final week, it made the draft order talk very plain and simple. Since most everyone on both Buffalo and Cincinnati's schedules paired with the other, it came down to only four teams that were unique.
Two for Buffalo, and two for Cincinnati.
In order for the Bills to get by Cincinnati for the third overall pick, they needed four specific teams to win their games. Buffalo needed Jacksonville and Kansas City to worsen their strength of schedule with losses, and they needed Indianapolis and San Diego to strengthen their strength of schedule with wins.
And lady luck (no draft prospect pun intended) was surely on the Bills side. Oakland beat Kansas City, Houston beat Jacksonville, Indianapolis beat Tennessee and San Diego beat Denver.
So it's official. The top four of the NFL Draft looks like this:
1) Carolina (2-14)
2) Denver (4-12)
3) Buffalo (4-12)
4) Cincinnati (4-12)
There's no opportunity for movement of any kind. That is set in stone.
So, now that we FINALLY know where Buffalo will be selecting in April, what can we expect?

I would get that Fairley he would help us in a lot of ways
Right now I don't think drafting a 2nd-rate quarterback would help us with the 3rd overall but whatever we aren't the brain trust
Former University of Pittsburgh coach Dave Wannstedt and the Buffalo Bills were working on a deal Friday morning that would make him assistant head coach and linebackers coach, a source who is part of the negotiations told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.
The deal was close but not done, according to the source.
Wannstedt has worked previously with Chan Gailey, who this season completed his first year as the Bills' coach.
When Wannstedt became coach of the Miami Dolphins in 2000, he hired Gailey as his offensive coordinator. Gailey spent two seasons with the Dolphins before moving on to coach at Georgia Tech.
The San Diego Chargers, Carolina Panthers and Cleveland Browns also had expressed interest in Wannstedt for various coaching roles.
Wannstedt, who was forced to resign at Pitt last month, has served as a Super Bowl-winning coordinator with the Cowboys and head coach for the Chicago Bears as well as the Dolphins.
The Bills' defense was last in the NFL against the run in 2010, allowing 2,714 yards rushing -- the second-highest total in franchise history. Buffalo allowed 200 yards rushing eight times.
Wannstedt was ousted after six years at Pittsburgh, and following a 7-5 season in which the Panthers were picked to win the Big East. He declined the option to finish the season with the team, and was not on the sideline for Pitt's 27-10 win over Kentucky in the Compass Bowl.

3) Buffalo Bills - CB Patrick Peterson, LSU
- Yeah. I know. You're probably not overly enthused by this pick. But let's get one thing straight. Patrick Peterson may be the most talented player in this draft. And if you think Chan Gailey, Buddy Nix and the rest of the Buffalo Bills are going to neglect Peterson as a possibility just because the Bills have a history of taking defensive backs high in the draft, then you're kidding yourself. The Bills will take the best player available approach, and in my opinion Peterson is the best prospect remaining. It's a positional need as well, with Drayton Florence, Donte Whitner and George Wilson all free agents, along with a rapidly aging Terrence McGee. Peterson makes a lot of sense.

Report: Bills Believe Newton is Their Franchise QB
The quickly spreading thought that the Buffalo Bills will take a quarterback with the third overall pick just had even more fuel added to it.
Tony Softli, who once was the Vice President of Player Personnel of the St. Louis Rams, is now a personality for the powerhouse sports station in St. Louis -- ESPN 101. Softli has also interviewed to be the General Manager of the San Francisco 49ers, so to say he's connected with league executives would be a bit of an understatement.
With that, Softli also is a contributing writer to 101ESPN.com, and outlined what he thinks the Rams may be looking at when they're on the clock with the 14th pick. It's a draft preview article of sorts, but there's also an interesting nugget of information hidden in there about the Buffalo Bills.
Here's an excerpt from Softli's column:
"But, don’t be surprised if quarterback-friendly head coach Chan Gailey makes a hard play for Newton if he is still on the board. Sources say they feel he is the franchise quarterback for the Bills' organization and would have time to develop because of Fitzpatrick’s presence on the roster."
Here's the full article from 101ESPN.
You can argue that the report from Don Banks yesterday could have been merely a smokescreen laid out by Bills head coach Chan Gailey, but you cannot ignore a former NFL front office member saying sources (and that's plural) believe Buffalo thinks Auburn QB Cam Newton is the franchise quarterback they're looking for.
Connected sources I've spoken with also come away with the same sentiments. I know he's a controversial person, and I definitely know it's either you love him or hate him. But whichever side you land on, if he's there at the third overall pick, I think there's a great chance that the Bills bring Newton to One Bills Drive.
