Coach Kirk gone

Don't disagree with firing the coaches but obviously the second part of this is just as important as the first. Who we hire is pretty critical, its really needs to not be Jeff Daniels as the head coach. If you want to make Jeff Daniels and assistant coach that's fine, but we either need a hard ass back there OR someone with some actual NHL head coaching experience. Ulf has no head coaching experience, Dineen didn't find early success, Evason has only been an AHL head coach. I don't know how things would work with Trotz, Lavi isn't coming back, Torts is way too expensive and insane for this market.

You have our attention now Ronnie, we are all waiting to see what you come up with next.

Not so fast. I get the impression that more heads will roll and E.Staal may just be one of them.

I'd like to see RF clean house in Charlotte as well.

Yeah ... just because firing Muller prepares a path for keeping the current core group (mostly) intact, that doesn't mean it guarantees that. I think blowing it all up and major shake ups are still options as we go forward. I just really felt like Ronnie had no choice but to start with canning Muller. His reviews from the players were bleh at best and he never succeeded in Job 1, which was cobbling together good enough special teams play to make up for roster issues. That was supposed to be his calling card and we never really showed anything like signs of life on the power play. When you can't do the specific thing you were hired to do and you underwhelm the room ... writing's on the wall.

Dineen didn't find early success.

I thought Dineen had a pretty impressive debut as an NHL coach. In his first year he took the hapless florida panthers to their first post-season appearance in 12 years. with home-ice advantage no less. that was a team that had no direction or hope when he took over.

In his first year with the Portland Pirates in the AHL the Pirates saw a 34 point increase over their previous season.

He also took over Team Canada's women's team when there was clearly some disarray in the organization that needed a fresh perspective. They went on to win gold, despite all their struggles in beating team USA that very year.

His track record is one of turning teams around in impressive fashion. sure he was eventually fired from Florida but his tenure with them represented the best season they had this century.

My hope is that RF hires Dineen. fresh eyes, natural leader, high intensity, and a track record of turning teams around. he can also build upon the lessons he learned from his first nhl gig.

Guy Boucher, si vous plait!

This nonsense of looking for love at family reunions has to stop....no to Dineen, Daniels, etc.

Who is the stupid reporter asking Ronnie if Brind'amour will be considered for the job? I swear the hockey media coverage here is beyond stupid!

I think if Trotz still wants to coach, and is not content to take an office job with the Preds, he's on top of several teams' lists. The Canes are one of several teams shopping for a coach.

At the risk of showing my ignorance....why is that beyond stupid question? He was the only one from the "coaching staff" that was retained and some fans have already asked (fans of all experience levels watch/go/spend money on the Canes). I presume whoever asked it (of course, you couldn't actually hear the questions, so I have no idea who it was) has a newspaper, website, blog to write for and wanted to include whatever it was that Ron answered?

I think he is saying the hockey media coverage in Raleigh should know, at least as much as we do, when it comes to these matters. And we are all pretty sure that Brindy isn't going to want to be the next Hurricanes head coach. We could be wrong, but it is kind of a silly question if you know anything at all about the Hurricanes and its personnel. The energy should be focused on a substantial question that doesn't appease a small portion of idiots on facebook.

Something like that...maybe. There is really no reason to dissect BK's comment though. What's your point? Do you think Brindy has a desire to be the Canes next head coach?

Yet, you just not only dissected his comments, explain why he might have held that opinion
Anyway, it was a legitimate question in that he was the only coach not fired attached to this debacle-- everyone else got shuttled off. I don't think anyone exactly expects Brind'Amour to be the next head coach, all options are on the table and he's an option-- just not a realistic one.

Because I was curious about why he thought it was beyond stupid? I guess the ask-er could have just written whatever they presumed to be RF's answer and published that.

No, I don't think Brind'Amour has a desire, but I really don't know the guy either.

Given that the press conference was about 20 minutes and that question took up about a minute or less, I'm not sure what "substantial question" didn't get asked.

No bid deal, I was just curious.

I think we all know BK well enough to not bother calling him out over everything he says. :)

Press conferences like these are easy to script.
Yeah, we fired our coach. He was a good coach and will find and become a success at the no level but wasn't right for us at this time. We wish him all the luck in the world.

Q: have you decided on a new head coach?
no, we haven't decided in a new coach yet as we are taking our time and examining all aspects of our team.

Q: will you be looking at <insert name>?
yes, we wil be looking at <insert name>.

Q: is there any interest in the coaching job?
Our phones have been ringing with inquiries.

Q: how are season tickets progressing?
season rockets are on track, a little, slow but we expect them to pick up over the summer - yeah, I know it wasn't asked but that would have been the answer.

Q: is <insert name> on the trading block?
We haven't decided the status of < insert name> as we are looking at all aspects of our team.

Q: will you be playing golf this summer?
I will be looking at the game from time to time as time permits.

q: will you go fishing with Eric staal in Ontario?
I will be looking at fishing from time to time as time permits.

The other "experienced", recycled coach that is lurking in the weeds awaiting another full time gig is the refreshed and rejuvenated Ron Wilson.

And dont forget old Iron Mike Keenan fresh off his KHL Championship behind the bench!

"There's always going to be situations where, as a player, if you don't like the coach, you still have to perform," the general manager said. "But I never got indications there was friction. That wasn't the big issue."

"This in no way shape or form takes the players off the hook," he said. "They have to be held accountable for their actions and how they played."

Best part of his first press conference as GM.

Brind'amour isn't even technically a "coach"...and has expressed more than once that he doesn't want to be. He's been asked point blank about the Checkers job before. So to me, it was an amateur-ish question that only someone who follows the Canes on assignment, would ask. Typical of an ACC basketball reporter who can name 3 Canes players past or present.

They did ask if they had spoken to any coaches, and Ronnie made a comment along the lines of "can't say, don't want to get in trouble with other teams". I wonder who the coaches were, who called and asked to be considered? That quoted comment made me immediately think of Ulf...who is still working for at least another week.

It's TOO easy for the bubble gum brigade of reporters around here to ask the scripted questions. No one has the huevos to ask the tough questions you only see proposed on TSN or NBCSN.

I wouldn't be too quick to assume that Ronnie's going to go with an old friend/teammate. He might end up doing that but give the guy a chance to think a little.

Keep saying this JB, I applaud this thinking. Give RF a chance, if anybody deserves it... Ronnie does.
