Final Week Before Trade Deadline

I expect Staal will go somewhere and maybe Versteeg.

BTW I noticed starting on March 8th the Canes play 5 sets of games that are Tue, Thur, and Sat. And there is 1 game on a Sunday. So only 1 back to back. Dec, Jan and Feb had 3 back to backs. The road trip in March is difficult as mentioned above.

Our schedule is very favorable on back-to-backs compared to other teams in the mix. We also compare well as far as level of competition remaining on the schedule. The biggest scheduling issue we have down the stretch is the road/home split. And that is a big issue.

The one thing not said is how much control RF has. If his owner, who has been bleeding money, thinks he has a shot at playoff revenue while trying to sell his team, then he may very much dictate that his GM stay the course versus sell.

To me, that argument applies only to the other guys in the mix ... not Eric Staal. Carolina has played their best hockey of the season while Eric has largely been a passenger. Any decent GM should be able to make that argument float ... even through Karmanos' thick skull.

And the whole thing with Eric Staal being traded doesn't have to 100% mean that he is never to return. If Eric REALLY REALLY wants to play here in the future and be part of this team next season and is willing to take a whole heck of a lot less money for no more than 3 years, I wouldn't be 100% against re-signing him in the offseason. I know there is a fair number of folks who disagree with that, but for the right price and term I would take him back.

But for this season, for the betterment of the future of the franchise, he has to be traded for assets to help us continue the rebuild. Denying that is foolhardy to me and as you said JB, its shouldn't be difficult for Ronnie to sell that to PK if PK is trying to influence Ronnie to not move UFAs for assets in a desperate attempt to keep the Canes in the playoff hunt. Eric has been invisible for most of the last 2 months....removing him from the lineup isn't going to make the Canes slim playoff hopes this year any slimmer.

And for the record ... here's what the playoffs REALLY mean for this particular team ... about $2.4 million. That's all. Roughly 1.2 million bucks per home game.

And if you actually think this club is getting out of the first round, then .... I just don't know.

So. Do you sell your soul for a couple of million? Heck, there's a chance you could save half that amount by trading Staal ... depending on the salary in return.

If nothing else, Ron can remind his old rookie-year road-game roommate that he was traded...won two Cups and still returned to the original org to close out his career, get his number in the rafters, and join management.

It could happen.

I understand what you are implying but I am pretty sure Rons last game (playing career) in the NHL came with the Maple Leafs and he was a healthy scratch.

Anybody remember the situation involving Ray Whitney at the deadline? That's a player we should have traded for picks, DIDN'T, and then he walked in the off season.

What a spirited debate on Hockey Central on Sportsnet today about trading Eric Staal. Kypreos and McLean both categorically saying he must be traded out of Carolina and he would easily get a first rounder and a prospect coming back. They screamed of too complacent, too comfortable, no fire to earn his money here...letting him play out the string and walk this summer is the biggest mistake the franchise could make according to the panel. Doug McLean still hearing that nothing imminent on the trade front at all.

Some whispers of Cam Ward to San Jose as a backup/insurance plan to support young Martin Jones.

He either wasn't asked or refused to waive his NTC. It's also possible that JR got no offers for him or lowball offers not worth considering.

Brad Malone was placed on waivers today. We had 23 on the roster, so, assuming he clears and is sent to Charlotte, that give gives RF some maneuvering room. Or bringing up McGinn or another Cherker tomorrow.

My recollection is that Whitney had an NTC and refused to waive it.

TSN reporting again 2 minutes ago that E12 still has not been asked to waive his NTC. I don't think that means much, except that a trade is not happening in the next 5 minutes. The parties could very well have discussed his NTC a lot, and just not formally asked for a waiver for any number of reasons.

Its now 4 days to the deadline. Usually things start really kicking up about now.

Wagner claimed on waivers by ANA from COL. Falk (CBJ) clears. Malone (CAR) on waivers.

Trade coming?

@ice_chip has made no mention of this...but andyT did! :)

Whitney wanted a multi-year deal and didn't want to be traded as a rental. JR gave him permission to negotiate with LAK to make the deal as that was the team that wanted him. He couldn't come to an agreement and thus, was never traded.

Something big within the big name rentals (Ladd, Boedkker, Eriksson, E. Staal) will likely go down by the weekend to get the party started prior to Monday. That usually kicks things up a notch with the rest of the GM's itching to make a move or two!

Good question on the waiving of Malone. You could come up with multiple theories:

* We are just hoping someone claims him to get his salary off the books because he has zero trade value

* We are planning to send him down to the AHL so he can actually play (since it appears he will never play for the Canes again). But that could have been handled temporarily with a conditioning stint and no waivers (assuming he accepted a conditioning stint)

* We need to free up that roster spot to:
- Call someone else up (although we really don't need anyone that is in Charlotte at the moment)
OR
- Have an NHL roster spot available for a trade may be coming that requires us to take on more NHLers than we are trading away

Guess we will know what the reason was in the coming days. What is the over/under on the amount of time it takes for our local Canes correspondent to get wind of Malone being on waivers?

Couldn't agree any more with Kypreos and McLean. I am personally getting a little nervous that everyone keeps reporting that Eric hasn't been asked to waive the NMC and Eric and RF haven't had that discussion yet. I think by now, that discussion should have taken place. RF isn't leaving himself much wiggle room here.

I also don't get the "return was too low" thing that is sometimes used when a player isn't traded. That is BS. If the deadline is about to end and all the Canes have is an offer for a second rounder on the table (not real likely) then you take it. That is one more 2nd rounder then they had before especially when the risk of losing Eric for nothing in the off-season is real.

I think I'll just put him out of his misery and tweet it to him. Jeez ... stupid NandO.

And it's hard to crack on Seravalli TOO hard when our only beat writer doesn't even notice when we put a guy on waivers.

Correct. Ray used his leverage to try and get a multi year deal out of the trade and when he couldn't he passed on approving it. That was his right under his contract. I didn't like it then (or when Nic Wallin did the same thing) but that's the risk you run when you hand out no trade clauses like Halloween candy.

Whitney was vindicated somewhat by eventually signing a multi year deal with Phoenix over the summer and then playing very, very well for the Yotes. Jimmy could have avoided the drama if he had simply hung onto his only top line quality playmaker with a decent deal ... but such is life.
