GDT: Devils visit Raleigh 5:00 PM

Oh please. Stop this insanity. THIS is exactly why I can't wait until this bum is no longer associated with the Canes. He made 17 saves on what, 19 or 20 shots? And completely whiffed on the winner.

I am far from a Cam apologist, and if I didn’t know you better, I would question your knowledge of the game. Cam makes the initial save, gives up a rebound and Hanifin allows the shooter to go right by him and put the rebound in the net. If Hanifin (who I’m still a big believer in, long term) does his job, Hall never gets close to that rebound.

If that was Darling giving up that softie, there'd be a parade of angry villagers marching through the village with torches. But people will defend Cam's softies till the very end. He sucks. Has always sucked. And will continue to suck into he retires. I'm so over this garbage. Cam cant stop 10% of the shots he faces. He lost that game, against another goalie who made 40 saves.

Or more. He does that all the time.

I have a bigger question, why is this defense so charmin soft year year after year? I cannot believe how this team can wax on and on about getting tougher in front of their own goal and actually making teams pay, yet it never happens. Hall was allowed to walk right in pretty much untouched but we all watch every game how easy that is on this bunch of softies.

Defense is not the problem. We're 10th in the league in Goals Against.

The issue is scoring and our lack of a true first-line center and one more scoring winger is really starting to show. We're 26th in the league is Goals For...and every team below us is on the outside looking in tot he playoffs.

If you think “this” defense is not part of the problem then you simply are missing the boat. Sure scoring is an issue but it’s far from the only issue and you have to look at more than goals against to see the real problem. Faulk is paid like your top defender and he has played like shit, Fleury has been a huge dissappintment, Hanafin is like Jekyl & Hyde...

Big crowd and an even bigger disappointment tonight. The passing was sloppy all night long. We were also out-hustled most of the game - and the Devils were coming off a back to back. During the final match up of the OT, I was screaming for someone on our side to do something - we looked like we were content to shadow box and yielded the initiative to NJ.

I do agree that moving Faulk will help immeasurably. And of course our defense and goaltending needs to improve. Slavin, Pesce, Hanifin and Fleury are all very talented and all very young and I'm confident that they will provide a strong defensive core down the road.

All of that said, this team's biggest needs are on offense. The lack of a #1 center will be the main reason if we don't make the playoffs.

Peters opens the OT with Staal, Slavin, Pesce. A prevent defense all the way.

Then comes a shift of Ryan, Skinner, and Hanifin, all turnover machines, and the same trio that was on the ice when Hall scored the winner.

I mean, do you even OT, bro?

It's time for Francis to go. He has unloaded the bad contracts he inherited from Rutherford but the big promised overhaul has not happened. He's too safe and too cautious. In a results driven league, the results are just bad.

He has not fixed the goal tending issue-- Ward, Lack and Darling have not been the answers.
The off season acquisitions have sputtered-- Darling is struggling backup, Kruger and Jooris are now in Charlotte-- all moves have been piecemeal tinkering, but no hard choices or aggressive moves.
Still no post season appearance and looks like another season tanked.

I'm sure because he's "The Franchise" folks cut him extra slack or make the excuse that Karmanos was cash poor, but bottom line there are just some things a GM has to do and the evaluation of personnel is key-- on the ice and behind the bench.

Amem brother, amen. Time to clean house from the top. Francis and Peters both have to go. You don't put penalty killers on the ice in OT.

When Tripp questions the Canes coach's strategy--and Tripp's argument makes sense--you know something is amiss. I think the fundamental question is what is the org willing to be. We've been cash constrained so we've basically had to play on the fringe and hope for some luck. Is Dundon really going to put money into the player budget? Does Francis know how to operate in that environment (it's not looking promising). I'm so sick of us claiming a strong core when it really doesn't exist. There are maybe 2 guys - Aho and Slavin--that feel like a true core to build around.

This team needs a new identity built around players with some skill and a will to win. Rather than a soft team with one guy (Walker, McGinn, etc) who brings physical play consisently

I plus one this.

I love Ron Francis. I'm not fond of Reluctant Ron. Just because you are a great hockey player doesn't mean you will be a great GM. He just doesn't have the guts to make the kind of decisions a GM must make.

I like Slavin, Aho, Pesce and Jordan Staal. No one else would be missed. All are easily replaced. None have much value.

Defense IS an issue in that, while the overall numbers are pretty good, we are plagued with BIG, dumb coverage breakdowns. Two of Jersey's goals last night are prime examples ... the opening goal is a nice finish on a power play. Nothing to write home about until you drill down and see the absolutely hideous gap control between our D pair caused by TVR being positionally blind for about 3 strides. Competent positioning by our D at a minimum makes that a tough shot rather than a pick your corner effort. You already noted the second ... Hanifin fails to block out a forward for what seems like the millionth time this season on the game winner. Yeah ... Cam can make a save and control the rebound in both instances but he doesn't. But it's a two way street out there and you simply cannot ignore how many breakdowns the Canes suffer in untimely situations ... in this case giving up the first goal in a game you've GOT to have and then barfing up the winner mere seconds from extending a disjointed looking OT into a shootout.

Again, while the overall goals against numbers may not suck, we're getting repeated basic positioning and responsibility errors from the D when the game is on the line or they're otherwise in pressure situations. Yes, youth is an issue but you sure would like to think these guys are learning from those mistakes, and that simply doesn't seem to be the case ... given the fact that it's the same guys making the same mistakes over and over again.

I'm not sure I've ever been more frustrated with the Canes offense than I am after watching us make two mediocre backup goaltenders look like brick walls in 4 point games against other playoff wannabe teams. Even in the darkest days of Mo's offensive cluelessness I wasn't this convinced that this team just doesn't know how to score goals at this level. GM, coach, players ... everybody.

Getting a puck on goal so you show up in the box score does not win games. And, after you go 200 feet remember to pick more wisely.

The issue is that we are repeatedly throwing pucks at the net, taking slap shots or ripping pucks at the dasher and hoping to clean up a rebound or to tap it in. There is now real strategy or execution to that. If you look at a team like Pittsburgh, they’re executing plays and that why guys beyond Crosby and Malkin succeed in that system.
