GDT: Devils visit Raleigh 5:00 PM

The canes had 18k+ in the barn. The number surprised the canes and they didn’t know what to do.

No jam down the middle. Staal can't do it all. Rask and Ryan just cant win their share of one on one battles. And the D lacks a veteran presence.

I'm tired of the same old thing we've seen before: out-shooting our opponents by 2 to 1 and still losing because we can't score. The Hurricanes shoot like Imperial Storm Troopers, and all it takes is one rebel fighter to pick them off with a single shot.

everything from the perimeter too, low percentage futile flailing of the puck apparently in order to satisfy some oblique metric. They might as well be shooting from the cheap seats. And when a rebound does occur in a prime shooting area, nobody can make anything happen in traffic.

Honestly, I'm even more sick of the commentators and other sports "journalists" around here accepting the fantasy that there's some dignity in outshooting opponents even when you're not scoring. No. They keep score based on GOALS, fellas. You wouldn't let a terrible shooting basketball team off the hook because they kept shooting the ball more times than their opponent, yet losing.

Over the last 3 games, the Canes have outshot their opponents 111-66 and were outscored 11-4. Against backup goalies. Tomas Greiss is DFL among 51 goalies in Goals Against, Keith Kinkaid is 43rd, 2 spots behind Darling. Kinkaid is 47th in Save % at .898, Greiss is tied with Darling for 50th.

When middle-skilled NHL'ers take easily seen shots from the blue line area and the walls not surprising that our shooting percentage is 4th from the bottom at 7.7%.

And even those that say "well, we just have to take more shots to score" miss the eye test that not many of those types of shots go in on NHL goalies without screening (which we also decline to do...except you, Lindholm and Staal...on occasion) or deflections.

So doesn't matter how many you take. Witness our last few games where the only goals we did manage to score were literally on the doorstep.

From an article at theathletic.com (paywall) - https://theathletic.com/247052/2018...s-blue-jackets-are-still-on-cusp-of-playoffs/

Bobvrosky - “They don't shoot the puck just to make a shot. They try to create offense, lots of redirections. In the second period, it was only 11 or 12 shots, but it was tough. There's nothing like they shoot from the blue line where I have to just make a save. They create offense, very smart. It's challenging to play against.”
