GDT: Leafs @ Canes 1/9 7:00

Jordan was a beast tonight, but I wonder if it has anything to do with Eric not being around which then frees him up to be a more vocal and active leader. He doesn't have to worry about showing up his big brother with effort! Nice to see and great game by the Canes.

Jordan has been in beast mode for a couple of weeks now, long before Eric went out.

Yes, he has been playing a lot better after a putrid start to the year but a 4 point night is on another level. He has only had a handful of 2 point games in his time so far with the Canes.

The leafs were bad last night and the canes, for once, took advantage of it.
I wanted to see how the canes played without the leader and they played a more team like game.
It will be hard to send boy back, he belongs in the big club. I never thought I'd be saying that.
Jstaal, well, not much more can be said. He's currently out shinning big brother.

Nice team effort & quality home win. Carolina was hitting on all cylinders and Toronto was playing like a bunch of strangers. J.Staal played like it was his team. I'd say that Staal #12 can take all the time he needs healing up.

There might not be many Leaf fans getting #8 Gleason jerseys anytime soon. Ouch. J.M. Liles looks relaxed and right at home here. Keep it rolling.

Hope the same team shows up tonight.

I don't know what the contractual implications are but as is, I would send Bowman down when E Staal and Tlusty return. Not Boychuk. I know Drayson had a decent start to the season, but production wise? And I have to say, I have never seen Boychuk play with as much intensity as he has with us this season. I really feel all of this is due to the energy and enthusiasm rubbing off from guys like Skinner and Malhotra.

I think Bowman vs. Boychuk ends up being about the money. Boychuk is on a 2 way deal...Bowman gets $600k no matter what. I'll update Boychuk 's waiver situation in a little bit. He's getting close to having to clear waivers again. Bowman obviously would need to clear waivers to be sent down now.

---edit--- Ok, here is where Boychuk now stands with clearing waivers. Again once you clear waivers once and are assigned to the minors as Boychuk was as the beginning of the year, when you are recalled, you have 2 separate categories that are tracked in terms of you having to clear waivers again to go back down to the minors

1) Regular Recall...10 cumulative NHL games played or 30 days on the roster

2) Emergency Recall....10 cumulative NHL games played

The 2 categories are completely separate from each other...games on regular recall do not count towards the games on emergency recall limit (and vice versa).

As of last night, this is where Boychuk stands:

1) Regular recall Games played: 7 games (he can play 2 more before having to clear waivers to be sent back down)

2) Regular recall Days on roster: 14 days (he can be on the roster 15 more days before having to clear waivers...obviously he would reach the game limit first at this rate)

3) Emergency recall Games played: 1 game

So the Canes are cutting this close with Boychuk, but at this point he can play tonight and Monday and not have to clear waivers to be sent back down to Charlotte. But that's it. If he plays one more NHL game after that while on regular recall (be it during a continuation of his current NHL stint or a future recall that is NOT an emergency recall) he would have to clear waivers again to go back down.

So if JR is closely paying attention here and doesn't want to have to expose Boychuk to waivers, then look for him to be sent back down to the minors after Monday's game just to avoid him playing that 10th "regular recall" game. Its possible he might not make it to Monday if 2 of Eric, Tlusty or Nash are ready to go.

Of course if the Canes never decide to send Boychuk to the minors again then this is all a moot point. I agree that his play has been pretty darn good and will be bummed when/if he ends up traded, back in the minors, or waived and lost. He sure looks like he's doing everything he can in his limited ice time to show he doesn't belong in the AHL. That's all great, but the Canes have a numbers problem that will squeeze him out of the NHL lineup...and probably very shortly. More things for JR to think about.

Staal the younger only got 3rd nhl star last night.
A miscarriage of justice for sure.

Are there any takers out there for a couple of dinged up "Superstars"?

Two different situations. Eric was getting into form and contributing before his injury. If baby brother continues like he has been, that with the Olympic snub should light a fire for continued improvement.

Cam has been off his game for a number of years now, whether you blame injuries, Stefan, conditioning, or parenthood (pick your issue).

I want Eric back full time.

I would love to see Cam traded for assets (ideal), but don't want him handed the starting job when he is healthy.

Nash would need to clear waivers, he started the year on the Canes roster and is not-waiver exempt. Unlike Boychuk he did not clear waivers at the beginning of the year (he wasn't brought through the waiver process).

Basically as stands with the current roster of NHL players, the only players who are not waiver exempt but do not have to clear waivers currrently are:

Boychuk (which I outlined earlier, his non-waivers clock is running out)
Sutter - He cleared waivers after his first 12 game stint and his recall on January 2nd was/is an emergency recall. He gets 9 games on emergency recall before having to clear waivers again I believe (he's played 4 so far on this recall). The minute that Eric Staal or Tlusty or Nash is ready to go then Sutter will have to go back to the minors as the emergency will be over (unless some other forward is dinged).

Our only 2 fully waiver exempt players on the NHL roster now are Murphy and Lindholm.

Couple of thoughts:

The way the Canes have been playing in January, they were due to kick somebody's butt eventually. I certainly don't mind that the victim ended up being this particular Leafs team, either. I don't like much about that squad. Notice that Gleason went straight back to drooling goon mode the second he put on their sweater for an example of my position. And their Captain? 40' trailer full of tools, that one. He's about as smart as that too.

On Nash ... I doubt they move him out at this point, either via trade or by subjecting him to waivers and sending him to Charlotte. If you noticed, he's been at least trying to dial up his physical presence over the last month or so, I think in an attempt to audition for a fourth line/depth role once everybody gets healthy and engaged. I think he stays for insurance purposes, as we really need to be carrying an extra centerman at this point. If and when he's ready, look for Sutter to go back to Charlotte. I seriously doubt anyone makes a waiver claim on a guy who offers almost no offensive upside.

On Boychuk ... well, hello Chuckie. Where you been? THAT's the guy they drafted and pinned so much hope on. Thanks for finally making Rutherford look like he knew what he was doing when he drafted you so high. Best game in a Canes uniform by about 2,000 miles.

On Jordan ... this has been coming for awhile now and he's been a streaky offensive producer over his career. 4 point games probably won't become the norm, but he's scored his goals in bunches in the past.

On Liles ... I really had forgotten how good a skater he was. He was so lost in Toronto's muck that I hadn't really seen those wheels since he was in Colorado. He's learned how to play in his own zone a little better, but at the end of the day you have a guy like around for his skating and his command at the point when you're on the power play ... and for the influence he can have on young Scooter. Nice goal big guy ... glad it was you and not Gleason making the old team pay.

On Eric ... seriously, I can't believe anyone even hinting that the team's better off without him. It just isn't true.

On Cam ... right now both Peters and Khudobin are vastly more reliable in net. I have no idea what you do with that fact, but it's as true as gravity. For my money, Khudobin is as good a choice for your next starter as anybody, but I seriously doubt this front office has the stones to move Ward. And as long as you keep all three of them, you've got complications out the wazoo.

Thanks Cmal
Tough decisions upcoming for JR.
I think maybe a trade or two.

I like Brett Sutter with the Canes. I find he fills that third or fourth line role very well.
I also would prefer to keep what we have but move Bowman and Nash. Boychuck is better than the three.

We might be better with Eric, but we might also be even better with whoever JR might get back in a trade package for Eric & Cam. Looking back I'd certainly call the Brindy for Primeau deal one that went our way.

I'd rather see the Hurricanes keep on a roll and maintain winning form than inject a less than healthy #12 back into the lineup and possibly disturb momentum. I guarantee Eric Staal would haunt this team as long as he was in the League if JR ever traded him.

In a cap era, I really think it's half impossible to trade away two highly compensated players in return for one. I don't think the money works for much of anybody ... unless you can pluck one gem away from a lower placed team who have some free cap space, like maybe Gaborik from Columbus (not that I'd make a move anything like that. I wouldn't) And even then ... it's a given that E Staal would be a hot property on the market, but Ward's just not in that place until he gets back and shows he can still play at a high level. Throwing in a $6.5 million a year make-weight on a E Staal deal seems a bit much to ask.

I think hoping that your GM is going to pull off a cap miracle is kind of a waste of energy. Sadly, there's a really good possibility that Carolina has to face a future without Ward as their starter WAY earlier than they hope, and that because of the circumstances, they'll have to take a financial bath to get him off the payroll.

Ha. He's been a ghost of his former self ever since Brindy relinquished the C. :lol

I remember when he played with the same enthusiasm as Skinner. Not now. Shame.

Whenever I hear the ragging on EStaal, I always think about this clip:

Yeah ... I'm not arguing the point anymore. Suffice to say the same I've said for a couple of years. E Staal is this team's most complete player and a VERY productive NHL first line center. He ain't perfect ... darned few are.
