Though Mirtle had a clear agenda to 'wow' the readers in trying to paint a picture where Gardiner is as good as any Leafs dman defensively, reality is he has the 3rd easiest minutes (as the Corsi QoC comparison showed), he doesn't allow of a lot of shots against when he' on the ice (which is Mirtle's only point) but he allows the highest goals per minute when he's on the ice.

It shows how good Phaneuf's been defensively, and how bad Gardiner's been defensively at the same time. That's what the advanced stats really show.

And despite all these stats easily available, Mirtle chose to ignore the GA/60 and the QoC stats to paint that picture ... too bad it's not true.

1 qualcomp is insignificant over the course of a season. its easy to understand when you look at the tiny difference there really is in opponent's cf% (zone-start adjusted):

phaneuf 50.6%
franson 50.6%
gardiner 50.5%
rielly 50.2%
polak 50.2%
robidas 49.5%

just not enough difference to mean anything.

2 zone starts ARE significant over the course of a season, and jake has received easier zone starts. but even when we adjust for zone starts, jake still comes out with the best CA/60 (59.2). and after a rough start to the year he's rocketed back up to 47.4cf% on the year, behind only rielly 48% and franson 47.5%.

3 the whole point of these numbers is that shots are a much better indicator than goals
