GDT: Round 2, Game 4 Canes v. Caps 5/12, 7:00

Hopefully the last home game of the series.

The Canes withstood early pressure from the Caps on Saturday and Freddie kept them in the game until they found their game. Svech jumped a lost faceoff and beat Thompson blocker side high to break the ice. Roslovic cashed in on the first of 2 power plays, and it was academic after that. RBA put his lines in the blender, shifting wings to all but Roslovic’s line and it worked. They’re skating the same lines this morning as they finished Saturday, so Jankowski is still out. Andersen isn’t skating, should just be a rest day.

The Caps came away a little bewildered that they couldn’t cash in on their early opportunities. They haven’t gotten anything from their top line and Carlson looks like he aged more than Burns in the last week. Thompson has been good, but he’s had to be, facing a constant barrage of shots.

TNT for TV, Kenny Albert is back in the play by play chair. John Forslund has the National radio call if anyone wants to sync. Mike and Tripp are on The Fan.

Yeah, note that both Chatfield and Martinook were banged up at the end of Game 3 so both will probably be powering through some kind of knock and subject to some reduced usage. With last change, that's less of an issue than it would be on the road. Both teams will want to grab the wheel first on this one, I'd think. Counterpunching has been for suckers for most of this series. I'm not sure how many wrinkles Carbery has in his bag of tricks at this point, but he might try to even things out a bit by shifting Protas and Beauvillier around and maybe re-inserting Leonard to try and conjure a third line that would pose a bit of a scoring threat. From the sound of things though, the Caps liked everything about Game 3 but the outcome, so ... shrug. I suspect that's more than little bravado-tinged, however so I do expect them to change things up a little. One thing they can't really do anymore is to shove Ovechkin out there for every offensive zone draw regardless of lines. He just doesn't have the legs for that anymore.

Speaking of legs, this is a big one for Burns. He answered the bell in Game 3 after a rough outing in Game 2, but with Chatfield banged up he and Slavin are definitely going to get tough minutes tonight. Say what you will about his reduced range of motion and shot velocity, but the guy has been an absolute warrior for this team this season. Answering the bell night after night for heavy rotation in all situations at age 40 has been a huge ask and he's done it without complaint.

I saw some reports that Raddysh stayed out with Washington's extras this morning, so one presumes Leonard will be back tonight. Honestly, I didn't get that change anyway. Leonard may not have found his NHL scoring boots yet, but he's dynamic with the puck, has been willing to mix it up and doesn't suck defensively. Raddysh is just a garden variety 4th line grunt.

Tonight’s officials:

Referees:
Jean Hebert #15, Garrett Rank #7

Linesmen:
James Tobias #61, Jonny Murray #95

Standby official: Wake Forest Freddie L’Ecuyer.

The Canes had Hebert for Devils game 2. The Caps had him for Habs game 5. Neither team saw Rank in the first round. The Canes didn’t have a great record with either ref this season, 2-3 with Hebert, 2-1 with Rank. The Caps had both frequently and are a combined 10-1-2 with them. Tobias and Murray also had the lines on Saturday, maybe they saw Pearl Jam last night or something.

If the Raleigh Pearl Jam shows had Dead Pioneers as their opening act as they were earlier on this tour, I would've for sure been in attendance. I would've left after their set, of course.

I'm going to see Wilco on Wednesday, just so my wife can see Waxahatchee for the millionth time. Chances are VERY good I leave before the headliner.
