Well, it COULD have been these. I actually like the one with the pirate's mast on it. The twin anchor thing, not so much.

September 6, 1996, a night I'll never forget. The track wasn't expected to come straight to Raleigh but..., we went to be about 11:00 and I just lay there listening to the howling wind getting stronger until I told Barb, "We need to get the dogs and go downstairs". It just kept getting worse, with trees cracking and I completely shut down on the den sofa until daylight and then outside to a jungle, a tangle of 120-130 foot trees all over. Chainsawing became my occupation for the rest of the fall - along with a lot of others of y'all, too.

And that was the impetus for Karmanos choosing the team's name the next year.

Remember it well...lost about 30 trees in my backyard, and thankfully, not a single one hit my house!

Lost 23, 3 on the house, the 2nd almost took me out when I went outside to see what had hit my daughter's room. We had no power for 8 days and since I'm on a private well, I had no water either.
 
Oy-yo, Andy. We lost a bunch of our trees and "gained' several from our neighbor whose several big oaks fell across a hill our back yard and were 10-12 feet off the ground - horizontal. Our big beech on the side dropped a limb as big as many trees on our other neighbors house and punctured his roof with a huge limb that ended on a bed in a, Thank God, unused bedroom. The son-of-a-beech by the deck dropped a limb that took out the light by the lower back door. That was the only damage on the house except an easily fixed roof repair. We were without power too for several days but had city water and a gas water heater so we had showers, too. And a generator, so we made coffee for the neighborhood each morning. We had to chain saw our way out of the neighborhood. The poor squirrels were so confused they ran up and down horizontal trees.

Frankly, Karmanos showed how aware and compassionate he is by picking a team name that was based on a disaster that decimated the new home of his team. And the SOB hasn't changed one goddam bit, eh?

Could have been worse. When that NASCAR dingbat was angling for an expansion bid for Raleigh he was going to call the team the Raleigh Rhinos. And we had a minor pro basketball team called the Bullfrogs once upon a time.
 
If we could start from scratch and do it all over again...what would a new NHL team arriving in the Triangle today appropriately be named?

Blue Jackets, Mighty Ducks, Lightning...were not talking about the most creative minds when it comes to naming NHL hockey teams in the past 20-25 years...
 
I think the anchors logo is apt,as often, most of the time, it seems they are skating with anchors tied to their a$$.

Could have gone more tradition based and tried Carolina Cougars. That was our old ABA franchise. Of course that sort of walks in the Florida Panthers, but such is such. Sadly most of the decent place name based nicknames have been soaked up by the colleges, and those have to off limits for practical reasons. Animals are always a nice fallback ... but North Carolina isn't noted for anything particularly fierce aside from various mountain cats ... thus Cougars, Panthers, et al. A Pirate theme might have been good, drawing on the Blackbeard traditions.

A-Hoy, Ladies and Gentlemen, your North Carolina Blackbeards! (Can you imagine the marketing extravaganza come playoff time, with p-off beards etc...?)
 
I like the pirate theme, but there's just not a name that really sounds good and isn't already in use. Can't use Pirates, Buccaneers, Raiders, etc. Marauders isn't too good, and Blackbeards sounds strange. Use could use "Revenge" as in Blackbeard's ship, but most folks wouldn't get it. There are probably more nautical theme's that might work.

Double duh - Raleigh icebergs. Slow moving, cold.
Logo - a big iceberg with a penguins head and flippers sticking out from under it.

Miami Hurricanes ... Carolina Panthers and Florida Panthers ... Duke Blue Devils and Central Connecticut Blue Devils ... NC State Wolfpack and Hartford Wolfpack and Nevada Wofpack ... about a zillion Wildcats .... heck, there are two AHL teams called "Admirals."
 
I don't mind our logo but always felt it was too big on the jerseys. I stop getting the Hockey News years ago.. Too bias.
