I was going to add that one ... but I think the league would have vetoed it since it's probably too similar to the Washington Capitals. But that old, original Ice Caps logo was just the best.

If you're going with a Pirate theme you could probably cme up with something to avoid the existing team names. Something like the Carolina Corsairs

I actually think that naming the team the Hurricanes was one of the few smart moves this organization has made from a marketing standpoint.

Sure makes more sense than a pig as a mascot. Still see no connection even though I love BBQ.
 
The pig was K's way of hoping to lure some of the pig farms in the Carolina's to advertise. Didn't quite turn out.

Personally I love the Hurricanes name and thought it was genius to name the team right after our epic storm. It just fits the area. Now for the logo, I would waaaaaay rather do with the old shoulder patch of the worm warming flag.

...and I will NEVER forget that September night. Didn't sleep for 48 hours. wife and I were trying to stack stuff on top of other stuff as the the water rose. Eventually gave up and waded over to our neighbors house at 3AM. What a night that was! Followed by months of chain sawing throughout the neighborhood. On the plus side we met a lot of neighbors we would not have otherwise!
 
The pig? Is everyone forgetting that the first holder of naming rights was Wendell Murphy? He got his money back when the Centennial Authority signed the agreement with RBC. He parlayed it into the Pig Palace at Carter Finley, to my mind, a better use of the money than just naming rights.
 
Right, the pig mascot was 'in honor of' the Murphy family or to try and placate them, the largest producer and processors of porcinity in the state: Murphy Farms, who also controlled hundreds of farms of pork producers, they didn't own. They were already multi-millionaires many times over and then they got rich by selling out to Smithfield Farms of VA. Smithfield was already the largest and Gwaltney's was 2nd, Murphy was 3rd. The first two were founded in the 1750-60's by Gwaltney boys who married Holleman girls and still were a hundred years later. It didn't help my financial statement a bit.

Wasn't Wendell Murphy the head of the Centennial Authority?

Makes more sense than a St. Bernard in Colorado, another dog in Calgary, polar bears in Toronto and St. Louis and a dragon on Long Island.

A. No. Wendell was never Chairman of the Authority. He was on the Authority Board for a long time, first as an appointment of the legislature and then as an NC State appointment.

B. The idea that the Canes mascot is somehow tied to the Murphy family is kind of an urban legend. That may be where the idea came from, but it was by no means a payoff of any kind.

C. Murphy's payoff for the naming rights fiasco was the Murphy Center at Carter-Finley. There's a direct 1 to 1 correlation there, as no additional funds were given or promised for putting his name on that building.

D. I have always like the pig mascot. When your team is named after a weather event, and you want a mascot ... you've got to pick something. And Calgary already has a hound dog.
 
Officially, I believe that Stormy is an "ice hog" instead of a pig.

Maybe he should have been identified as a "puck hog" instead. :sarcasm
 
Name great. Logo doesn't seem to fit name. 3rd jersey is a closer approximation, imo. Depends on how you see a hurricane... I don't see those colors when I think of actual Hurricanes. Maybe I'm a stickler for details, it's not a big deal really. But, The name IS great. But Hurricanes are supposed to be scary. So storm flags/warnings of "dire consequences if you don't get out of the way of the oncoming Hurricane(s)" work if we're going for a theme through and through that fits on all levels, name and logo and both combined.

I like Stormy. He's cool and fun looking and when it comes to dogs, it works no matter the team imo because we are used to seeing dogs dressed up. They look 'cute' in our uniforms, do man's best friend :) Oops. Seems to work for (ice) hogs too. ;)

I think the University of Miami's mascot-- the seagull or pelican-- works better for team named the Hurricanes. But I can't say the last time I saw a pelican or gull in Raleigh. Given our play over the past 10 years, we're better off with a pig.
 
We've had canes players and stormy at our Ltp graduations. Stormy is the one they want to see.
 
I would like a hybrid concept for logo, well that's what I call it... a less pronounced, more outlined layers of a hurricane, like the logo now, but that extend basically in a 'tiled' way on the uni. To make one big hurricane (again in outline only, so imagine the current logo with no color, just the lines and zoomed in so that it occupies as much space on the jersey as possible - keeping the 'eye' of the storm center to the chest still. The eye would be bigger and inside.... in old school style jersey writting
"Carolina
HURRICANES"
As for colors... I would go with the black and silver/grey themes, keeping the red for some accents here and there (on the road version anyway). The home would look great with the same colors as the current 3rd jersey, but with the logo as described above.
 
We could pay a tribute to the state's textile industry and call them the Weavers, and go with a completely blank jersey, but I think the joke would be too subtle for most.
