Kyle Dubas named 17th GM of the Maple Leafs

Love to have a guy like this take over and help balance out Babs' stupid reliance on old gudpros. Also think he'll be able to do some great moneyball things to find hidden gems out there to help the Leafs roster this off season.

I think the latter is how we're most likely be able to improve our defence. Dubas and the pro scouts need to find some names we're maybe not expecting. Until we can finally draft our own Norris winner, the blueline will have to be a collective effort that hopefully produces a whole greater than the sum of the parts.

Does Hunter stick around?
At the very least, I'd expect he'd be sticking around to run Toronto's draft this year.

Over the longer term, we'll see. There has been a ton of media chatter about how Hunter wants the job, wouldn't appreciate being "passed over", wouldn't want to work for a much younger guy, etc. But none of that is rooted in factual information; it's all coming from know-nothing, attention-seeking blowhards like Nick Kypreos.

So, who knows what's true or not. For the foreseeable future, Hunter may be perfectly happy being a highly-compensated assistant GM, with total control over a scouting department with a huge budget & a ton of resources worldwide. Or maybe he wants to be "the guy" somewhere else. Or it might even be possible that Dubas would prefer having someone else run his drafts.

I suppose that was a long-winded way of saying "who the **** knows".

But the important point for me is that if Hunter does end up leaving, I'm sure the Leafs will have little problem attracting another highly-qualified candidate to the job.

I think this should also serve as a reminder to everybody to never listen to the Kypreoses of the world about the Leaf front office.

None of these guys have had any idea what's going on inside the Leaf organization since the moment Shanahan took over, and when they say different, they're making shit up for views.

They should have listened to Uncle Lou, he said Dubas was going to be the Leafs GM one day, only he himself could screw it up.

Shanahan says they had two extremely qualified candidates for GM in house (Dubas, Hunter)

Brendan says people may underestimate just how much Mark does for the team, not just scouting

"It was a difficult decision ... Mark wanted the job for sure"

Dubas says he likes some of the rules Lamoriello has put in place ... noncommittal on beards, they'll talk about it as a staff

Brendan Shanahan says he interviewed Kyle Dubas and Mark Hunter. He called Hunter a couple nights ago to say Kyle was getting the job.

Shanahan: Hunter wanted the job, and respects the decision
Dubas: Hopes Hunter stays

I'm feeling really juiced with Dubas starting up as the Leafs GM. This will be an incredibly interesting offseason and next couple of years to see what this smartypants does to help transform the Leafs into a perrenial contender.

I'm going to go with yes. Friedman made an interesting comment about it a week ago. His take was that Hunter really dislikes the publicity, speaking to the media, etc, and that he hadn't heard anyone saying that Hunter actually wanted the job.

That he'll be "answering" to Dubas is a bit over stated. He and everyone else including Dubas answers to Shanny. Dubas isn't being given the keys to the cars and ultimate autonomy. He's being moved up to apply his methods to all pro player acquisition. Hunter still runs his draft show without interference. Nothing really changes for him other than his new boss is a bit easier to talk to I'd imagine.

I suspect that we can expect that Dubas won't be signing Roman Polak & Leo Komarov to contract extensions.

One note on the Dubas hiring: when Lou Lamoriello arrived, the team announced his term as three years. Asked after the media conference, Brendan Shanahan said Dubas has a five-year term.

Fantastic move. This guy is tons ahead of the curve and the mouth-breathers already hate this (Simmons already has a column panning it :smilielol5:), thus proving it right.

I hope one of the first things dubas does is to tell shanahan to tell HNIC to get the 2 idiots (simpson and his buthole hughson) off the toronto airwaves.
And I hope (sorry MZ and zeke) that he steers away from a Carlson signing
