Leaf Rumours

phaneuf needed to be better. chara played a ton and found a way to get it done.

but that said it is completely and utterly ridiculous to pin the loss on phaneuf. kessel aside he's the least of the team's concerns.

as for whether or not he is on the trade block -- i think the fact that carlyle felt that he had no choice but to play phaneuf for nearly 3 minutes straight says all you need to know.

yeah, Dion was toast after 1 playoff round and we obviously can't have that with our top defenceman if we're going to go anyplace in the postseason. Chara looked gassed in a playoff series too...but that was in round 4, against the best team in the league who've won 2 Cups in 3 years, and he's getting to the tail end of his career as well.

Nonis had to improve the group around Phaneuf and it looks like he's done that now that Ranger has signed and Gardiner looks poised for a full 82 games. If we lose Franson that puts a damper on things, but that probably opens the door wider for Rielly as well.

Phaneuf isn't the type of player you can put out there half the game(few are). With a stronger supporting cast maybe we can play him a bit less this season so he's fresher for the playoffs.

we were running all over him the last couple of games.

kessel even knocked him down for chrissakes.

Phaneuf is absolutely, positively, the kind of player you can put out there for 25+mpg in all situations. He's done it his whole career, and he's done it amazingly well.

Would be nice to lessen the toughness of his minutes, but playing him fewer minutes would just be stupid.

I said a bit less. I'm not saying drop him down to 20 minutes. Gardiner is really damn good, and he's going to eat up well over 20 IMO. for one. Ranger will probably end up playing at least 18-20, especially if Franson is moved. Rielly is an x-factor, to name a third.

Phaneuf doesn't have to try to be Pronger now. This is a good thing.

A fresher Dion is a much better Dion, and a better Dion means a more successful Leaf team.

Really? That is a potential disaster. Why would you even qualify that guy?

If a contract is less than a certain amount can you send them down without counting against the cap?

Jesus ****ing Christ.

Holding on to Fraser at anything more than a nickel is too much, and now we're stuck with him suddenly.

**** this shit. How stupid can they be??

Now we're going to lose Franson because some dickhead arbitrator is going to give him $1.5m. Jesus ****ing Christ.

A) He can be traded (at that price and with his +/-, some stupid GM will cough up a mid/late-round pick for him)

B) Liles will not be with the team come October

Think everybody needs to calm down a bit. Lots of summer left.

Man the weather has been fantastic lately. None of that garbage, suffocating humidity like we had earlier in the month.

I was at the baseball game yesterday: not a cloud in the sky, a nice breeze, and 23 degrees. Best possible weather combination for the summer.

It should be like this all the time. :worshippy:

Phaneuf is more than capable of playing 25 mins a game at a high level -- he's done it his whole career. He wasn't overused at all (minus the last 3 mins of game 7).

The only thing that's bothering me is the cool nights, because that's September weather to me.

And Phaneuf, for better or for worse is seen by most of the MLSE organization, from the players to the gondola(I know it doesn't exist any more) as a heartless, gutless, pig. Watch the video, of game seven, last two minutes. He might as well have handed two center ice faceoffs to the Bruins.

Now you can Corsi, Fenwick and stat your ass off Zeke and whoever else, but that guy is the GOAT of all GOATS for losing the series. AFTER Jake Gardiner and Franson almost singlehandedly won the series for us. He is a goner, either through the season or after the season is over. Quote me on that.

I do believe there is some truth to your allegations, but I find it exceptionally hard to believe they'd be willing to let him walk, or just take whatever the best is that they can get for him, as an impending UFA, if the return is pretty speculative or worthless.

I mean, if he's a cancer in the dressing room, that's one thing, but if he just had one bad game at the worst possible time, that's another.

If Edmonton is a taker and we can extract some ridiculous forward out of them, and Rielly has an exceptional first 40 games, then maybe you trade him. But I think resigning him is the most likely scenario.

And I've said for some time, I like Phaneuf's point totals, but he's not the beast his fans make him out to be.

He isn't as physical as he could be, he does make a fair number of mistakes, and his offense is for lack of a better word weird since he spent a lot of time simply unable to hit the net in his time as a Leaf.

He's been top 12 in points two years in a row, and he is always among the leaders in hits. And he doesn't miss the net any more or any less than other top dmen.

I really don't know what people expect. Him to be Chara? If that's what they're expecting, they're going to be disappointed because there's only 1 Chara.

1. IMO Physicality in defencmen is over-rated, I find when a guy goes for the big hit it takes him out of play, besides Phaneuf is still physical he just does a lot better job at his timing. 2. Everyone makes mistake in hockey, espically playing defense due to it being based on reaction as opposed to thinking, Phaneuf compared to other leaf blueliners is pretty tame and has improved his game on the blueline. 3. The biggest beef I have with him is how weak he is at taking out the other player in front of his net, he does a piss poor job at boxing the guy out or even knocking him on his ass, thats one key area he needs to work one

He's definitely good and I like him, but he's not a gamebreaker or a gamechanger. He's not quite captain material either. Of anyone, I think Lupul exemplifies what a captain should be, but his health just doesn't let the poor guy play enough.

12/13:
Player A: 48 gms, 9 gls, 28 pts, 25:11, 131 hits, 91 blks (82 gms, 15 gls, 48 pts, 224 hits, 156 blks)
Player B: 48 gms, 7 gls, 19 pts, 24:56, 101 hits, 64 blks (82 gms, 12 gls, 33 pts, 173 hits, 109 blks)

Guess the players.

He definitely is a game changer. And he can change a game defensively, offensively and physically.
