Hypothetical question here:
As Dion Phaneuf rumors start to surface, and with the Leafs in questionable (at best) playoff contention right now, would you consider making a move for the young defenceman if it meant involving Kaberle going the other way?
Reasons:
1. Phaneuf is a Burke type player. He is Canadian, plays a physical game and has top-end potential that is unfortunately not being reached right now. Elisha Cuthbert-induced? Regardless, could be the premier Bruke top end guy of the future.
2. Speaking of Burke-type, I think it is becoming evident that going into a rebuild like we are, we need to turn top-end talent for players while they are mired in slumps. At this time White looks to be a young Kaberle and could use more time being a top-pairing dman in the 2nd half if things start to go south.
3. If Phaneuf were to pan out as he ages a bit we could be looking at:
Phaneuf - White
Beauchemin - Komi
Gunnarson - Schenn
which makes a strong top six even in a few years when the offense and goaltending start to peak at their development (considering the Burke plan rolls into form).
So do you make this trade and see Kaberle leave? What would it take to work something out? Even then, does it help the Leafs or hurt us?
A core of Kessel, Kadri, Phaneuf, Schenn, Komi, White, and the monster looks nice if we can add one or two more top end pieces...
