Leaf Rumours

Trading Franson would be a huge mistake.

I really think with Kadri and Franson they should do a Subban type deal. Let them prove that last year (strike shortened season) wasn't a fluke. If it wasn't, they can cash in next time.

Someone must be willing to take Liles.

His contract may not be ideal but he can still play unlike some of the contracts that are out there.

I think with the cap situation as it is this year, and the potential (which seems likely) that is will increase next year and the years to come, players might be better off doing a bridge deal, cuz you can bet that you;ll be getting less this year to stay under the cap, but you should be able to get a bigger piece of the pie when the cap goes up.

Subban is going to get PAID because of that bridge, if not by Montreal, by someone.

Yeah but the Leafs will also have to pay Kessel, Phaneuf, Gardiner, Bolland and possibly Reimer.

They've put themselves in a tough spot.

If Liles can't be sent down, I can't see some team who has a player that can be sent down, yet is making similar money but maybe done, being traded.

Ie... Liles for a similar money type player who is finished and we can just send him down to the Marlies.

He can play, but he's not worth anywhere close to 4M dollars, which is the problem. If he were a FA, I could see someone signing him for maybe 1.5M, but nowhere close to what the Leafs are paying him.

But that still doesn't save you any cap space. You only save 900k from sending a guy to the farm. And I doubt any team has a guy who can't play but makes similar or less, since they would have bought them out.

Someone big at the top wants Phaneuf gone fast, so far, no takers, but as JCY or Killer93 can corroborate, this guy is persona non grata around MLSE.

Franson ain't going anywhere, Dreger is smokin a bad bowl on that rumour.

meh. zidlicky just signed for $4.0.

Zidlicky wasn't a bottom pair/healthy scratch dman this season. I can't see anyone taking on Liles's contract after the year he just had.

Problem is you likely can't trade Liles - he's total dead weight. Maybe if you eat half his salary, but that doesn't help you too much.

A Liles buyout would cost 1.2 million for 6 years....sucks, but it would get up over 8 million in capspace...enough to lockdown Franson and sign Kadri to a bridge deal.

That's the worst case scenario imo, but it's doable.

Friedmann on the radio yesterday after talking to Nonis said he feels that Nonis wants to do something big to make this his team. Fried asked about the extensions to Phil and Dion and said that they are not on the front Burners right now.

I ain't biting on the sources of Organic Steroids above, but if Nonis did want to do a big move to make this HIS leafs team, trading Phaneuf to the Oil would be it. I say you keep Franson at 4.25 or whatever and that core of defense is very different, mobile, fast, smart and if you keep Fraser and Granson (or whatever this big kids name is) you could still have some toughness.

That could be the big move that Nonis is waiting on.

I don't think Dion is going anywhere, but I'm beginning to believe something big is up.

Nonis keeps repeating that there's no urgency regarding the RFA's and the pending UFA's -- when there should be.

Edmonton has the kind of pieces that definitely constitute a big move. Interesting.

Sounds like if anyone is traded it'll be Franson. Not that I want that but I'm sure Franson is more likely to be traded than Phaneuf. Also I believe Franson would garner a heftier return then Phaneuf.

He might, but as much as I discount some of the rumour milling around here, I've heard some things that make me wonder if Phaneuf may be tradeable.

I mean I suppose they could trade Phaneuf, though they would be relying on Ranger, Rielly, and Granberg to step up and play in the op 6. Not to mention needing Franson and Gardnier to play as well or better than they did in the playoffs. Barring any defenceman coming back in a trade involving Phaneuf this would be the depth chart I would assume.

Gardiner - Franson
Gunnarsson - Rielly
Ranger - Granberg
Liles - Fraser

Not terrible but a lot of unproven talent.
