Leaf Rumours

So if you had to put odds on whether Phaneuf was still captain of the Leafs for game one of the 2013-14 season, how much money would you put on it?

Like I said, if you think I pulled Gauthier out of thin air, well go back to putting a tooth under your pillow and expecting some cash in the morning.

Numerous mock drafts had Gauthier listed as the Leafs pick, and a month before the draft I was arguing that he was my pick there unless Rychel was available at the 21. Difference is, I don't claim I have MLSE contacts and instead package it all as my own opinions.

If Phaneuf was available for 10 cents on the dollar, he would have been traded already.

Mindzeye, don't diminish yourself with those lame paintbrush strokes. I am the only guy in the last week anywhere who made the call on the internet.

Phaneuf, starting for Leafs as captain. IN game one of the new season. Pretty strong. Every GM in the league saw him lose the game for us, allowing goals three and four for Boston, with Reimer coming in as a close number two. It IS what is IS. Phaneuf screwed the pooch RIGHT where we needed him. He wussed and pussed. If that is the best Leaf defenceman you have ever seen. Then you really haven't been watching Franson and Gardiner very closely and you are about 13 years old.

Teeds, you're the only one going on and on about that game 7 and blaming it on Phaneuf. You can't hold that epic collapse on 1 player.

Franson and Gardiner are sheltered dman at this point in their careers. They aren't comparable to Phaneuf in the least.

Phaneuf, playing 18-20 minutes, against the opposing teams 2nd/3rd lines, would look pretty damn great too. Instead, Phaneuf plays 25 minutes, against the opposing teams best players, night in, night out. When Gardiner and Franson do that, my opinion my change.

Simply not true. Gauthier was the consensus pick at 21 among at least a handful of the big mock draft sites, and I myself made the argument for him being the best prospect available at 21. Feel free to go back in the draft thread and confirm it.

Then every GM in the league saw him get triple shifted over the last 3 minutes of the game..

It comes down to whether Nonis thinks Dion Phaneuf is a top 10 NHL defenceman or not, as that is how he's currently paid and I'm not expecting him to take less on his next contract.

You don't nickel and dime your elite talent. There's no such thing as overpaying for elite talent. Does it really matter if they pay him 6,7,8 per year? We're talking about an impact player, in his prime, with a rising cap.

Give him his money.

Same thing goes for Kessel.

Thing is, it is easier to prove Kessel is among the very elite at his position than it is for Phaneuf. you can certainly make a case that Dion is a top 10 D, but it's a easily arguable point. There is no chance whatsoever you could call him a top 5 D. Meanwhile Kessel is top 5 at his position...that's a guy you give a max contract no questions asked.

I do think that this season could be Dion's best yet for the Leafs, as with Gardiner and Ranger getting full time spots the talent around him on D is better than when he arrived and better than last season. We're not going to be playing him with bottom-pair or borderline AHL players like Aulie, Kostka, Holzer etc etc this season.

and yes, it's highly doubtful we'd get enough value back for him in a trade -- the Flames got nothing for a younger Dion with more years under contract -- and we'd be left looking for the #1 top D again. we'd probably get a player, 1st round pick and prospect. that's not terribly enticing given the hole you'd be creating.

There's lots of things that point to Dion being one of the top dmen in the game -- minutes played, points, strength of comp, hits etc. He's basically near the top in all the major categories.

If the Leafs can't see this, depsite all the evidence, they deserve to suck.

I'd be fine keeping Dion, he's a very good player.

I don't think I'd be ok with paying him 7-8 million though.
